Selena Quintanilla was a singer/songwriter. Her contributions to music made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. Her music, style and influence is as current today as when she was alive – a true institution for the ages. She was named Billboard Magazine’s "Top Latin artist of the '90s", the "Best selling Latin artist of the decade" and in 2016 charted as the 2016 “Top Latin Album of the Year, Female Artist” – her legacy lives in her music and family.  While alive, Selena was regarded by the media and adoring fans as the “Tejano Madonna” for her cutting-edge look, style and dance moves.  Today, she ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting the Texas sound into the mainstream national market.

Born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas, Selena was the youngest child of the Quintanilla family. She debuted in the music scene in 1980 as the lead of the family band “Selena y Los Dinos” with her siblings A.B. Quintanilla and Suzette Quintanilla.  Not only did Selena make record breaking music, but she broke all barriers of a male-dominated music industry. Her popularity exploded after she won the Female Vocalist of the Year in the 1986 Tejano Music Awards – a feat she would repeat nine consecutive years.  Selena began recording professionally in 1982 and in 1989 she signed with the newly-formed Los Angeles record label EMI Latin and released her first of five record setting albums. Some of her most popular songs include: Bidi, Bidi Bom Bom, Dreaming of You, No Me Queda Mas, Amor Prohibido andComo La Flor.

Aside from her significant contributions to music and culture, Selena was active across her community as she donated time and money to many local and national civic causes – a tradition that continues today through the work of The Selena Foundation. In the mid-1980s, Coca-Cola appointed her its Hispanic ambassador and spokesperson. Her community engagement and the impact of her loss was so great, that two weeks after her death, George W. Bush — then governor of Texas — declared her birthday “Selena Day” in Texas.

On March 31, 1995, Selena passed away tragically and her passing made shocking global headlines.  Her posthumous crossover album, Dreaming of You (1995), debuted atop the Billboard 200, making Selena the first Latin artist to accomplish this feat. In 1997, Warner Bros. Pictures released Selena, a film about her life and career, starring Jennifer Lopez as Selena. As of 2015, Selena has sold over 65-million albums worldwide.

On October 17, Google launched a video Doodle to celebrate Selena. The video Doodle explored the story of her life set to one of the most iconic songs: Bidi Bidi Bom Bom. The date also specifically marked the date of Selena’s first studio album release with Capitol EMI (self-titled “Selena”).  The Doodle ran in 18 countries for 24 hours starting at midnight local time( except the US, where launch began at 9 p.m. on October 16/12 EST on October 17).  Google partnered with the Quintanilla family to digitize for the first time and launch a Google Arts & Culture Exhibit on that same day.

Charles Aznavour

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Honors Charles Aznavour with Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Watch us as Charles Aznavour unveil his star on the Walk of Fame below

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proudly honored legendary entertainer Charles Aznavour   with the 2,618th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, Thursday, August 24, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. The star was dedicated in the category of Live Performance at 6225 Hollywood Boulevard next to the historic Pantages Theatre.

“Charles Aznavour is a popular entertainer known around the world and loved by millions of fans across generations,” stated Ana Martinez, Producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies. “We are thrilled, as we know the people of his homeland France are to see his star dedicated on our historic Walk of Fame.”

Helping Emcee and Hollywood Chamber President/CEO Leron Gubler to unveil the star were guest speakers California State Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León and director Peter Bogdanovich.

With millions of fans worldwide, international superstar and singing sensation Charles Aznavour has attracted legions of international and multicultural fans for more than eighty four years. His popularity transcends many generations. It is no coincidence that a 1998 CNN/Time Online poll named Charles Aznavour the “Entertainer of the 20th Century.”

As an international recording artist and singing sensation, Charles Aznavour has sold more than 180 million records.

With his career spanning more than 70 years, Aznavour has recorded 1,400 songs (1,300 of which he personally wrote) and has produced over 390 albums, all in multiple languages: French, English, Armenian, Spanish, Russian, German, and Italian. Many of his records have gone Platinum and Gold.

Aznavour’s continued sold-out tours can only be matched in global scale by the numerous international honors he has received throughout his career.

At 93 years young, “France’s Frank Sinatra” continues to write and perform, with his family and friends by his side.

In 1986, in a nod to his acting career, Aznavour served as a member of the jury for the Cannes Film Festival. In 1996, Aznavour was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 1997, France, bestowed upon him the prestigious Officier de la Légion d’honneur (Officer of the Legion of Honor), an honor which   recognizes extraordinary military and civil service. In 2004, Aznavour’s ethnic homeland, Armenia, named him a National Hero, the highest honor awarded in Armenia. In 2015, he was awarded by royal decree, Belgium’s Commander in the Order of the Crown.

In addition to music, Aznavour is credited in over 90 films, including: The classic “Shoot the Piano player” directed by Francois Truffaut (1960) “Candy” (1968), with Marlon Brando, Ringo Starr, and Richard Burton; “The Tin Drum” (1979), which won the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Film; and the French-dubbed version of “Up”(2009), Disney’s feature film.

Born in Paris on May 22, 1924 to survivors of the Armenian Genocide, Aznavour discovered his passion for performing arts early in his life. His father put together live shows at his local Parisian restaurant for friends. With such an early exposure, Aznavour and his sister, Aida, took up acting and singing together. At nine years old, Aznavour performed in his first play, “Emil and the Detectives.” This performance marked the beginning of Aznavour’s 84-year-and-counting career as a songwriter, actor, singer, and all-around global entertainer.

After WWII, Aznavour partnered up with Pierre Roche, a “gifted pianist” by Aznavour’s word. Together, they formed a successful duo while on tour in Canada. During the late 1940s, Aznavour and Roche gave a truly grueling line of performances: 40 weeks’ worth of shows, with about 11 live performances per week. On this tour, Aznavour wrote his first song, J'ai Bu.

In 1946, fate took a turn for the better when Aznavour met Édith Piaf, the famous French chanteuse. Piaf invited Aznavour to tour the United States as her manager and songwriter. This partnership worked well for both of them: Piaf entertained the audience with her voice, and he witnessed live performance at a level above his.

In 1956, Aznavour began his solo career at the Olympia music hall in Paris with his first solo hit song, “Sur Ma Vie.” A few years later, in 1960, Aznavour performed in front of what he thought was a tough audience at the Alhambra music hall in Paris. One can only imagine his astonishment when, after coming out for hisfinal bow, he received a thunderous applause, which marked the beginning of his solo career as a singer.

The 1970s and 1980s saw Aznavour’s at his peak in writing and performing songs. These two decades also saw two of his greatest hits and affirm his standing as a world-class entertainer. “Yesterday When I Was Young” (1970) is considered Aznavour’s most popular song in the United States. Across the pond, his most popular hit, “She” (1974), topped the charts for solos in the United Kingdom for four consecutive weeks. It went Platinum with over 1 million sales.

From his humble beginnings in Paris, Aznavour has traveled the world, played the Carnegie Hall in New York; the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles; Yerevan, Armenia; Montreal, Canada; London, UK; Brussels, Belgium; Tokyo, Japan; Dubai, India; Los Angeles and countless other U.S. cities and throughout the world. In October 2016, he performed at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, his last stop on his 2016 North American tour.

Aznavour has dedicated his efforts towards making a difference in the lives of other people. Among his charitable activities he used the proceeds from the hit song “Pour Toi Armenie” to aid victims of the 1988 earthquake in Armenia and continues his humanitarian projects through the Aznavour Foundation founded with his son Nicolas Aznavour in 2017. The goals of the Aznavour Foundation are to continue the development and implementation of educational, social and cultural programs. One of the main projects of the Aznavour Foundation will be to create an authentic, lively and interactive museum, retelling of Charles Aznavour’s life and achievements.

Aznavour also serves as Armenia’s ambassador to Switzerland and to UNESCO in Paris. In addition, as a composer and performer of original content, Aznavour has campaigned strongly for anti-piracy laws and international copyright and intellectual property protections.

Born on Feb. 4, 1940 in New York City, Romero became interested in filmmaking at a young age when he borrowed an 8mm camera from a wealthy uncle. Inspired by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s musical opera, “Tales of Hoffmann” (1951), Romero began making his own short films and was arrested at 14 years old after he threw a flaming dummy off the roof of a building while making “Man from the Meteor” (1954). While attending Suffield Academy in Connecticut, Romero made two 8mm shorts, “Gorilla” (1956) and “Earth Bottom” (1956); the latter being a geology documentary that won him a Future Scientists of America award. After graduating high school, he attended Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA where he earned his Bachelor’s in Art, Theater and Design in 1960. Romero continued making shorts such as “Curly” (1958) and graduated to 16mm films with “Slant” (1958), both of which he made with sometime collaborator Rudolph Ricci. Following work as a grip on Alfred Hitchcock's “North by Northwest” (1958), Romero shot the feature-length “Expostulations” (1962), a satirical anthology of loosely-connected shorts that showed hints of his later social consciousness.

After forming the commercial and industrial production company, Latent Image, in 1963, Romero cobbled together $114,000 in order to direct his first feature film, “Night of the Flesh Eaters.” Renamed “Night of the Living Dead” (1968) after landing a distributor, the unrelenting film – which was criticized at the time for its onscreen excesses – became a landmark cult film and significant social barometer that forever changed the horror genre. With no heroes or redemptive meaning – only unstoppable nihilistic evil rampaging through small town America – the movie popularized the zombie apocalypse subgenre of horror, spawning numerous imitators throughout the ensuing decades. Though decidedly cheap in production values, “Night of the Living Dead” nonetheless stood the test of time as an innovative cult film that attracted new fans every generation and became Romero’s signature work.

Romero’s other films include: “Season of the Witch,” “The Crazies, “Knight Riders,” “Creep Show,” “Monkey Shines: An Experiment in Fear,” “Two Evil Eyes.”

Romero secured his cult status with two remarkable films: “Martin” and “Dawn of the Dead”.   He later went on to write “Day of the Dead, the ostensible conclusion to the “Living Dead” trilogy which emerged as one Romero’s strongest horror films to date.

Romero also worked in television as the creator, co-executive producer and occasional writer of “Tales from the Dark Side.”  Romero teamed up with Stephen King again for his adaptation of King’s novel, “The Dark Half.”

In 2004, Romero returned to familiar territory with “Land of the Dead,” a continuation of his zombie franchise long thought to be finished with “Day of the Dead.” This time, however, Romero increased the energy with a fast-paced actioner that was not shy on the gore and violence, pleasing both fans and the uninitiated. “Land of the Dead” ended up being one of the best reviewed films of the 2005 summer! He continued his zombie revitalization with “Diary of the Dead,” which was more of a reboot than a sequel to the other four movies in the “Dead” series. He then made the sixth in the series, “Survival of the Dead” (2010), which saw the inhabitants of an isolated island off the coast of North America conflicted whether to kill their own relatives rising from the grave, or try to find a cure. Romero’s “Dead” films continue to inspire such hits as “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and “Zombieland” (2009).

In 2013, Romero’s “Empire of the Dead” was announced by Marvel Comics. It was a 15-issue limited comic book series which began publication in 2014, and ended in late 2015. “Empire” features zombies similar to those in his “Living Dead” film series, but differs slightly because vampires are also part of the story.

Dubbed the “Godfather of Zombie Films,” George A. Romero was a pivotal figure in the development of the contemporary horror film and the progenitor of the zombie apocalypse subgenre.

Filmmakers who consider Romero as one of their influences include Frank Darabont, Guillermo Del Toro, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino to name just few!

Sadly, Romero passed away on July 16, 2017 from a brief, but aggressive battle with lung cancer. He slipped away listening to the score of “The Quiet Man,” one of his all-time favorite films, with his family by his side. He leaves behind a filmmaking legacy that has endured, and will continue to endure, the test of time!

Prospect House Entertainment in association with Glendale Arts and Chris roe Management will present a George A. Romeo tribute and Memorial at the Alex Theatre tonight.

He also received nine Golden Globe nominations for his film scores and seven Grammy nominations for the soundtracks of his various TV and movie scores.

Goldsmith’s music is played virtually every hour of every day around the world. This is in part due to his many contributions to big and small screen incarnations of the legendary Star Trek. He scored five of the movies for the franchise, and his heraldic theme for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) became the well-known signature for the long running TV series, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

During his career which spanned more than 50 years, Goldsmith composed the music for nearly 200 films, over a dozen iconic TV themes, and another 20 TV movies and miniseries. No composer was more respected by fellow practitioners of the craft as much as Goldsmith was for his unerring dramatic instincts and his innovative and even groundbreaking application of many different musical sounds and styles.

Goldsmith was born February 10, 1929 in Los Angeles, California. Classically trained, he studied piano and composition from a young age and was, from the time he was a teenager, determined to write music for movies. After studying at both USC and Los Angeles City College, he went to work at CBS, which employed him as a composer for radio and TV throughout the 1950s. He wrote his first score for a feature length film, “Black Patch,” in 1957. However,he continued to work in TV through the 1960s and early 1970s, and composed scores and familiar themes including Dr. Kildare, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Hollywood Television Theater (PBS) andThe Waltons, as well as scoring episodes of classic series including The Twilight Zone and Gunsmoke.

In addition to his busy film and TV schedule, Goldsmith also composed for concert halls. His symphonic works include a cantata, Christus Apollo (1969)with words by Ray Bradbury, narrated by Charlton Heston and later by Sir Anthony Hopkins; Music for Orchestra (1971), commissioned by the St. Louis Symphony and Fireworks:A Celebration of Los Angeles (1999), commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Following the attack of9/11, Goldsmith composed an in memoriam. The elegy, September 11, 2001, which was performed at the Hollywood Bowl days after the tragedy.

Notably, in 1998, he was commissioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to create an anthem for its annual awards ceremony. Goldsmith’s Fanfare for Oscar debuted at the 70th annual Academy Awards and is still being played every year during Oscar telecasts.

Worldwide, Goldsmith conducted major orchestras, performing concerts of his music. In the United States, some of the orchestras he conducted included the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington D.C., and the New York Filmharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Internationally, Goldsmith conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Madrid Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Seville Orchestra and Japan’s, Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra.

Goldsmith received many honors during his lifetime, including Variety's first American Music Legend Award (1995); an honorary doctorate from Boston’s Berklee College of Music (1990); lifetime achievement awards from the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers (ASMAC 1990), and the Society for the Preservation of Film Music (1993); two governors’ awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS 1994, 1999); and an honorary membership in London’s Royal Academy of Music (2003). In addition to these accolades, Goldsmith is immortalized with astatuette in his likeness awarded at Spain’s International Film Music Festival. Each year for the past decade, the festival’s highest honor, “the Jerry” is awarded to an individual for excellence in the art of film music.

Giving back to the community that nurtured him and launched his career, Goldsmith began teaching in the 1990s: as the instructor of the Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television course at the University of Southern California, and then also as a Regents Lecturer in the Department of Music at the University of California at Los Angeles. He became a Visiting Professor at UCLA, teaching a yearly composition class. Additionally, in a mentoring capacity, he conducted the Young Musicians Foundation Orchestra, the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra, and the Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra.

Several college scholarship funds bear his name, including the Jerry & Carol Goldsmith Music Scholarship at Los Angeles City College, and two fully endowed scholarships for composition at UCLA: the BMI / Jerry Goldsmith Film Scoring Scholarship and the Jerry Goldsmith Scholarship Fund for Film Music Composition. There is also a Jerry Goldsmith Memorial Fund for Cancer Research at the Tower Cancer Research Foundation in Los Angeles.

In the days following his death in 2004, the beloved composer was eulogized on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives with the following tribute: “Jerry Goldsmith leaves behind a distinguished repertoire of outstanding and memorable film scores and television themes that are as recognizable as they are innovative.” “His versatility and genius” were cited and Jerry Goldsmith was declared a national treasure!
