Philip Edward “Phil” Hartman (September 24, 1948 ~ May 28, 1998; born Hartmann) was a Canadian American actor, comedian, screenwriter and graphic artist. Born in Brantford, Ontario, Hartman and his family moved to the United States when he was 10. After graduating from California State University, Northridge, with a degree in graphic arts, he designed album covers for bands such as Poco and America. Feeling the need for a more creative outlet, Hartman joined the comedy group The Groundlings in 1975 and helped comedian Paul Reubens develop his character Pee-wee Herman. Hartman co-wrote the screenplay for the film “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and made recurring appearances on Reubens’ show “Pee-wee's Playhouse.”

Hartman became famous in the late 1980s when he joined the sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live.” He won fame for his impressions, particularly of President Bill Clinton, and he stayed on the show for eight seasons. He was given the moniker “The Glue” for his ability to hold the show together and help other cast members. In 1989, Hartman won a Primetime Emmy Award for his “SNL” work. In 1995, after scrapping plans for his own variety show, he starred as Bill McNeal in the NBC sitcom “NewsRadio.” He had frequent roles on “The Simpsons” as Lionel Hutz, Troy McClure, and others, and appeared in the films “Houseguest,” “Sgt. Bilko,” “Jingle All the Way” and “Small Soldiers.”

Sadly, Phil Hartman passed away in 1998. The authorized biography of Hartman titled “You Might Remember Me: The Life and Times of Phil Hartman” written by Mikel Thomas will be released on September 23, 2014 by St. Martin’s Press. Rick Springfield

Rick Springfield Honored with
Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Watch Rick Springfield Walk of Fame star ceremony at the end of this page.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proudly honored performer Rick Springfield with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, May 9, 2014. “We have been hearing from fans around the world who want to know when Rick Springfield is getting his star,” stated Ana Martinez, Producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies. “Well, folks the time has come and the fans have flown in from all over the country.”

Emcee Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and guest speakers Doug Davidson, Jason Thompson and singer Richard Marx were on hand to unveil the star for Springfield, in the category of Recording at 7060 Hollywood Boulevard. The star ceremony was streamed live exclusively on www.walkoffame.com.

For all of his accomplishments as an actor, best-selling author, and documentary subject, Rick Springfield’s first love has always been music, a passion he’s harbored since first picking up the guitar at the age of 12 in his native Australia.

With 25-million records sold, 17 Top-40 hits, including “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “An Affair of the Heart,” “I’ve Done Everything for You,” “Love Somebody” and “Human Touch,” as well as a 1981 Grammy® for Best Male Rock Vocal for his No. 1 hit single “Jessie’s Girl,” Springfield shows no signs of slowing down.

But Springfield’s love for music goes beyond the studio walls where he records his hits.  This iconic rock star has been on the road, touring for more than 30 years. These days, Springfield brings a more intimate, yet still lively show by performing solo in his “Stripped Down” show. He incorporates personal stories about his music and life into the show, and has even added a question and answer segment as a way to truly connect with his audiences. Excited fans and critics have made “Stripped Down” one of the most talked about tours of 2014, receiving rave reviews and sold out shows across the country.

Although his solo tour has been very successful, Springfield will take a break from The Stripped Down Tour as he brings his band back on the road again to co-headline a tour with friends and fellow musicians Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. The multi-city tour will kick off on June 28th in Atlanta, GA with additional dates throughout July. This tour marks the first time that Rick will tour with Pat and Neil. Following his summer tour, in October 2014, Springfield will return to his native Australia for his first headline tour in 20 years. He will finish the year with more “Stripped Down” shows.

In 2013 Springfield teamed up with Dave Grohl on Grohl’s multi-faceted passion project, Sound City, which encompassed a documentary (Sound City), an album (Sound City: Real to Reel), and the Sound City Players tour, a string of critically-acclaimed shows with fellow documentary subjects including Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor, John Fogerty, and Lee Ving among others. The Sound City: Real to Reel CD won the 2014 Grammy® for Best Compilation Soundtrack.

In October 2012 Springfield released “Songs for the End of the World” his 17th studio record, a collaboration with songwriter Matt Bissonette. “Songs for the End of the World” addresses the need to be consoled and cherished in an age of anxiety about the future of the planet. Filled with personal lyrics and giant hooks, it’s a pop/rock tour de force.

Springfield’s current musical career renaissance can be traced back to the albums Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance (2004) and Venus in Overdrive (Ume, 2008), which entered the Billboard sales charts at No. 28, his highest debut in 20 years. In 2005, Sony Legacy’s released the retrospective double CD Written in Rock: The Rick Springfield Anthology.

In the early 70s, Springfield already had a handful of hit records in his native Australia. Once he immigrated to the United States, he resorted to acting, landing the role of Dr. Noah Drake on daytime television’s “General Hospital,” as a way of making ends meet until his musical career took off. And take off it did, with the 1981 success of “Working Class Dog” followed by “Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet,” “Living in Oz,” “Hard to Hold” soundtrack and “Tao.” In addition to “General Hospital” Rick’s other notable TV roles include a four-episode arc on “Californication,” “Hawaii Five-O” and “Drop Dead Diva.”

Prior to his Walk of Fame ceremony, Touchstone will published Springfield’s fiction debut, “Magnificent Vibration” on May 6th.

Springfield’s autobiography, “Late, Late at Night,” published by Simon & Schuster’s Touchstone imprint in 2010, enteredThe New York Times best-seller list at No. 13 and hit the Los Angeles Times and Publishers Weekly lists as well.  Rolling Stone named it one of the Top-25 rock autobiographies of all time. In the book, which he wrote himself, Springfield speaks frankly about the depression he’s battled throughout his life.

Rick Springfield has donated his name, time and talent to: Voices of Uganda, The Hoops for Life Foundation, The Humane Society, and is active in promoting animal rescue and adoption.

Tavis Smiley

TELEVISION PERSONALITY TAVIS SMILEY TO BE HONORED WITH
STAR ON THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored television personality Tavis Smiley with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today on Thursday, April 24, 2014 near the famous corner of Hollywood & Vine. “Tavis Smiley is an inspiration to our generation and future leaders. He continues to deliver entertainment, advocacy and politics with his honest conversations,” said Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “His fans will be glad to see Tavis join our Walk of Fame family.”

Emcee Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and guest speakers Larry King and Jay Leno were on hand to unveil the star for Smiley, the 2,522nd star in the category of Television at 6270 Hollywood Boulevard. Guests included Walk of Famers Dave Koz and Ray Parker Jr, family and friends. The star ceremony was streamed live exclusively on www.walkoffame.com.

Smiley was born in Gulfport, Mississippi. His family later moved to Indiana and he went on to attend Indiana University. Subsequently, he moved to Los Angeles to serve under Mayor Tom Bradley before venturing into broadcast media.

From his celebrated conversations with world figures to his work to inspire the next generation of leaders, Smiley — broadcaster, author, publisher, advocate, entrepreneur and philanthropist — has emerged as an outstanding voice for change. He is currently the host of the late-night television talk show Tavis Smiley on PBS, as well as The Tavis Smiley Show from Public Radio International (PRI).

In addition to his radio and television work, Smiley has written 16 books. His memoir, What I Know for Sure: My Story of Growing Up in America, became a New York Times best seller, and the book he edited, Covenant with Black America, became the first non-fiction book by a Black-owned publisher to reach No. 1 on The New York Times best-sellers list. He also co-wrote the New York Times best seller, The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto. His forthcoming book, to be published in September 2014, is Death of a King: The Real Story of the Last Year in the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Smiley was the presenter and creative force behind AMERICA I AM: The African American Imprint. This unprecedented traveling museum exhibition, which debuted in January 2009, toured the United States for four years, celebrating the extraordinary impact of African American contributions to the U.S. and the world, as delivered through rare artifacts, memorabilia and multimedia. Many of the artifacts Smiley discovered and displayed during the AMERICA I AM tour are now on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution.

Smiley’s most gratifying accomplishments are rooted in his commitment to champion human rights and empowerment issues, and in his passion to inspire the next generation of leaders. Since its inception, the Tavis Smiley Foundation has provided leadership training and development for more than 6,500 young people through ‘Youth to Leaders’ training workshops and conferences. Expanding upon Smiley’s pervious anti-poverty work, the Foundation recently launched Ending Poverty: America’s Silent Spaces, a four-year national initiative to examine barriers and identify solutions to reduce hardship among our most vulnerable citizens. FILM PRODUCER JACK H. HARRIS HONORED WITH
STAR ON THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME

Watch Jack H. Harris Walk of Fame star ceremony at the end of this page.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has honored film producer Jack. H. Harris with the 2,517th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. “The Chamber prides itself on selecting people who are innovators of the film world. Mr. Harris’ film “The Blob,” is one great example of the creativity that Hollywood puts forth to the world,” stated Leron Gubler, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. “We are thrilled to honor Mr. Harris with a star next to fellow film innovators Dennis Muren and Rick Baker.”

Emcee Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and guest speakers Larry Cohen and Brian Witten helped Harris unveil the 2,517th star in the category of Motion Pictures at 6764 Hollywood Boulevard in front of The Guinness World Record Museum.

Jack Henry Harris was born in Philadelphia in 1918. His father’s job as a movie theater projectionist and ultimately a booker in a film exchange may have first ignited young Jack’s love of films.

Harris grew up to become a uniquely successful producer-distributor in the film industry and has been involved in nearly every phase of show business for more than 80 years. He has distributed more than 1,000 films in his career.

Jack performed professionally as a child entertainer in the vaudeville theaters.  By the time he was nine, he appeared in two silent feature films, capturing hearts in the first as a wide-eyed street urchin grabbing for coins in post World War I Moscow, followed by a performance in “Abie’s Irish Bride.”

Upon graduation from high school, Harris became an usher for a theater circuit, where he earned $10 per week.  Within one year, at the tender age of 18, he was promoted to the position of theater manager. In two years’ time, he managed three theaters and his innate showmanship resulted in packed houses, drawing in young viewers who piled in for a bonus event all his own, “Uncle Jack’s Kiddie Show.” Within five years, he presided over 16 theaters.

Harris took a detour from the Hollywood scene to serve in the U.S. army. After 4 ½ years of dedicated service and a distinguished military record, he returned home to Philadelphia, spending the next five years working as a publicity and sales representative for a variety of studios. In 1953, he opened his own sub-distribution office in Philadelphia and later opened two more offices.

In 1954, he acquired the rights to nationally distribute a feature film from the Boy Scouts of America entitled “Jamboree”. This project led him to the eventual production of “The Blob,” a Paramount release which set box office records all over the world. It was in “The Blob” that Harris’ discovery, Steve McQueen, was first brought to the attention of the major studios.

Harris went on to produce a second feature, “4-D Man,” introducing stars Robert Lansing, Lee Meriwether and Patty Duke to audiences in widescreen color and a third, the Cinemascope color adventure-thriller, “Dinosaurus.”

In 1961, Harris started an international distribution company, Jack H. Harris Enterprises. Its premiere release was “Paradisio,” the first nudie movie in 3-D, which became an outstanding box office smash.

Displaying his usual visionary acumen, Harris went on to work on “My Secret Life,” followed by two Jack Nicholson-starring westerns, “The Shooting” and “Ride in the Worldwind.”  Later Harris and son Anthony produced “Beware of The Blob” directed by Larry Hagman and starring Robert Walker Jr., Godfrey Cambridge, Carol Lynley and Shelley Berman. This mighty sequel to Jack H. Harris’ first production went into worldwide release.

Additional films on the Harris release schedule included: “Schlock,” “Season of the Witch,” “Bone,” “Teenager,” “Dark Star,” “Ape,” “The Eyes of Laura Mars” “Astro Zombies” and “Star Slammer.”

Harris is still going strong today in both production and distribution, always in step with the latest innovations and trends. In 1991, Harris and his wife writer/producer Judith Parker Harris teamed on the production of “Blobermouth.” This zany comedy utilized the actual 1958 “The Blob” film, enhanced by additional special effects and music, and dubbed with all-new comic dialogue by the famed improv group, Kent Skov’s L.A. Connection.

Currently in development, Harris and his wife are in collaboration with producers, Brian Witten and Richard Saperstein on another remake of the ever popular classic “The Blob.”

All of the Harris titles were transferred to Worldwide Entertainment Corporation in 1974. There’s always something fresh to look forward to from the creative mind of Jack H. Harris. Original productions are also in discussion, including a possible stage musical of “The Blob.” New young producers, directors and screenwriters are continually clamoring to do remakes of “Dinosaurus,” “4-D Man,” and other films in Harris’ library.
