Richard Claxton Gregory aka Dick Gregory is a comedian, civil rights activist, author, recording artist, actor, philosopher and anti-drug crusader. He is a native St. Louis, Missouri.  He was drafted into the army in 1954.  After being discharged in 1956, with a desire to perform comedy professionally, he moved to Chicago.

Gregory attributes the launch of his career to Hugh Hefner, who watched him perform at Herman Roberts Show Bar. Hefner hired Gregory to work at the Chicago Playboy Club.

By 1962, Gregory had become a nationally-known headline performer, selling out nightclubs, making numerous national television appearances, and recording popular comedy albums. Gregory, whose style was detached, ironic, and satirical, gained the attention of audiences with his political and controversial stand up acts. By being both outspoken and provocative, he became a household name and opened many doors for Black entertainers.

As an influential American comedian, he has used his voice to convey to both white and black audiences his message on civil rights. His social satire helped change the way white Americans perceived black American comedians since he first performed in the public arena.

In October of 1963,  he answered the call of Medgar Evers. His life was forever changed.  Gregory went to Selma, Alabama and spoke for two hours on a public platform two days before the voter registration drive known as “Freedom Day.” Gregory later became more involved in struggles for civil rights, activism against the Vietnam War, economic reform and anti-drug issues.

In 2000, Gregory was honored at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., by a sold out house with special tributes by Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr., Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Cicely Tyson, Mark Lane, Marion Barry and many more.

Gregory is listed as No. 82 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of all time. He has appeared in numerous films including: “Steppin: The Movie,” “Letter to the President,” “Malcolm X: A Search for Identity,” “In Remembrance of Martin,” “The Hot Chick,” “Children of the Struggle,” and many more. He has written 14 books and has 15 comedy albums that contain his stand up acts and his political commentary.

He has been married to Lillian Gregory since 1959 and on the day of his star ceremony they will also be celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary. They have 10 children.

Celebrities, politicians and statesmen alike from the Kennedy family to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Marlon Brando sought Gregory’s wisdom and counsel; many still do so today.

Redefining cool for a new generation, Williams is a creative force who uses music, fashion, and design to express his distinctive style. From his beginnings as a teenage prodigy and multi-instrumentalist in Virginia Beach back in the early ’90s, through enough hits to earn him Billboard’s Producer of the Decade in 2010, to his current status as multi-media superstar, Williams has never stopped creating.

Starting his producing career as one half of The Neptunes with Chad Hugo, Williams has helped create such classics as Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” Robin Thicke’s  “Blurred Lines,” Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” Jay-Z’s “I Just Wanna Love U (Give it 2 Me),” Britney Spears’s “I’m A Slave 4 U,” and Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You.” With over 100-million copies of his productions sold,   Williams’ music sounds like something no one else has thought of just yet. He’s also created a new way of looking at established stars such as Snoop Dogg, Madonna, and even the Rolling Stones.  Over four albums, Williams and Hugo along with Shae Haley created an unpredictable hybrid as part of the alt-rock/hip-hop group N.E.R.D.

The music industry has honored Pharrell with 7 Grammy Awards including 2004’s and 2014’s “Producer of the Year.” as well as ASCAP’s prestigious Golden Note Award in 2012. He received a 2014 Academy Award Nomination for his original song “Happy” which was featured in the animated film “Despicable Me 2.” The popular song “Happy” remained atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart for ten consecutive weeks, and peaked at No. 1 on iTunes in 103 markets worldwide. The song is the lead single off of his new album “G I R L.” Pharrell’s latest solo album “G I R L” was released on March 3, 2014 to rave reviews.

Pharrell is currently seen on the NBC Emmy Award winning show “The Voice” as one of the four expert coaches.  “The Voice” airs Monday and Tuesday Nights At 8 p.m. with the finale airing on December 16.

With his latest venture i am OTHER — a multi-media creative collective that serves as an umbrella for all his endeavors, including Billionaire Boys Club & ICECREAM apparel textile company Bionic Yarn and a dedicated YouTube channel —  Williams’ vision continues to push pop culture forward. Williams’ prolific body of work extends beyond the world of music. His diverse artistic creations range from designing a sculpture with prolific contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, to accessories and jewelry for Louis Vuitton, to T-shirts for Japanese mega-brand Uniqlo, to adidas sportswear, and to the forthcoming perfume collaboration with Comme des Garçons.

Pharrell’s work in the humanitarian field is an extension of his success. In 2008, he founded From One Hand To AnOTHER (FOHTA), a foundation focused on supporting the Pharrell Williams Resource Centers’ learning programs for underserved youth in at risk communities across the nation. This past March, Pharrell partnered with the United Nations Foundation to celebrate the International Day of Happiness inspiring individuals all over the globe to demonstrate their unique “happy.”

Philip Edward “Phil” Hartman (September 24, 1948 ~ May 28, 1998; born Hartmann) was a Canadian American actor, comedian, screenwriter and graphic artist. Born in Brantford, Ontario, Hartman and his family moved to the United States when he was 10. After graduating from California State University, Northridge, with a degree in graphic arts, he designed album covers for bands such as Poco and America. Hartman co-wrote the screenplay for the film “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and made recurring appearances on Reubens’ show “Pee-wee's Playhouse.”

Hartman became famous in the late 1980s when he joined the sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live.” He won fame for his impressions, particularly of President Bill Clinton, and he stayed on the show for eight seasons. He was given the moniker “The Glue” for his ability to hold the show together and help other cast members. In 1989, Hartman won a Primetime Emmy Award for his “SNL” work. In 1995, after scrapping plans for his own variety show, he starred as Bill McNeal in the NBC sitcom “NewsRadio.” He had frequent roles on “The Simpsons” as Lionel Hutz, Troy McClure, and others, and appeared in the films “Houseguest,” “Sgt. Bilko,” “Jingle All the Way” and “Small Soldiers.”

New Kids on the Block

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK HONORED WITH
STAR ON THE HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME

Watch New Kids on the Block unveil their star on Walk of Fame below.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce  proudly dedicated the 2,530th  Walk of Fame star to multi-platinum selling, award-winning performers New Kids on The Block today, Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. The star is located at 7072 Hollywood Boulevard. “Fans have been asking for quite a while now when the New Kids on The Block were going to get their star. We want to thank them for “Hangin’ Tough” for waiting patiently to see their favorite boy band’s star ceremony,” stated Ana Martinez, producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies. “Fans from all over the United States and the world have flocked to Hollywood for this special day!”  Helping Emcee and Hollywood Chamber President/CEO, Leron Gubler to unveil the star in the category of Recording was Arsenio Hall. The event was streamed live on www.walkoffame.com.

New Kids on The Block was formed in 1984 in Boston, Massachusetts. Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood signed with Columbia Records and their first album entitled “New Kids on The Block” was released. Their popularity grew with the releases “Hanging Tough” and “Please Don’t Go Girl.” The following year the New Kids were touring the country and their songs were reaching the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Charts. In 1990, the group won two American Music Awards and earned a Grammy nomination. By 1994, the group disbanded and went their own ways. By that time, they had sold 80 million albums, shattered concert box office records playing an estimated 200 concerts a year worldwide and grossed more than one billion dollars. They achieved five platinum albums,  ten top 10 singles, and five No. 1 singles.

After 15 years out of the spotlight, the 21st century saw the boys from Boston stage one of the biggest and most anticipated reunions of all time. In 2008, they officially revealed their return on The Today Show. An enormous crowd gathered at Rockefeller Center for their first comeback performance, and everything snowballed once again from that magical moment.

Their long-awaited fifth album, “The Block,” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200.  Galvanized with new tunes including hot collaborations with Lady Gaga and Ne-Yo.

The group’s bevy of hits include “You Got It (The Right Stuff)”, “Cover Girl,” “Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time),” “Hangin'’Tough.” “I’ll Be Loving You.” “Step By Step,” and “Tonight.”

Not to mention, in the early ’90s, the band had smashed box office records performing 200 concerts per year at stadiums across the globe and were named “highest paid entertainers of 1990” by Forbes Magazine. However, they weren’t content to simply rest on their laurels in the '00s. Instead, they upped the ante immensely with a series of career firsts over two decades into their illustrious legacy.

Since reuniting, the band has gone on to tour to sold-out arenas worldwide.  One of those sold-out tours even included a once in a lifetime stop at Fenway Park.  The Boston pop icons brought their brainchild NKOTBSB to the famed stadium as part of the historic NKOTBSB Tour. Selling out 140 arena shows on their reunion jaunt and numerous co-headline dates, the Fenway Park gig remains a high watermark for the group.

In April 2013, New Kids released their sixth studio album 10, which debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 chart. Following the release, they co-headlined The Package Tour along with 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men. The wildly successful tour spanned nearly 50 shows across North America before concluding in August 2013. Most recently, NKOTB completed the New Kids On The Block After Dark, the exclusive four day engagement at The AXIS in Las Vegas from July 10-13. The four incredible shows were part of the ultimate Vegas weekend that included concerts, pool parties and after parties – and were the exclusive North American tour dates in 2014.

In the midst of it all, New Kids On The Block always find time to continually give back. In 2009, the guys and their fans started supporting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Since then, they’ve collectively raised in excess of $200,000 towards finding a cure for breast cancer. Fans continue to host fundraisers and jumpstart events like “Race for the Cure” and “3-Day for the Cure” teams furthering the cause. After losing his mother to the disease, Wood created “Remember Betty” to celebrate her memory. Their charitable pursuits extend even farther. Supporting Toys For Tots in 2010, they put on an intimate show at the Boston House of Blues, and the hometown gig sold out in a matter of minutes and raised over $60,000 for the charity.

There are even more firsts on the horizon for New Kids On The Block though, and they've still got "the right stuff" after all these years.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored the popular Norteno group Los Tigres Del Norte, (the Hernandez Brothers, Jorge, Hernan, Eduardo, Luis and cousin Oscar Lara) with the 2,527th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on August 21, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. The star for the multi-award winning group was unveiled at 7060 Hollywood Boulevard in front of the Live Nation Building. “We are proud to let the world know that Los Tigres Del Norte is the first Norteno band to be honored with a star on the Walk of Fame! They have entertained many generations with their music for several decades,” said Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “We are pleased to embrace their entertainment careers with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

Emcee and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President and CEO,  Leron Gubler unveiled the star for Los Tigres Del Norte in the category of Recording. The star ceremony was streamed live exclusively on www.walkoffame.com.

During the early ’70s, Los Tigres became the first act signed to Fama Records. Founded by Art Walker, Fama grew to become the leading Spanish-language record label on the West Coast. Walker, a local impresario, first heard the group on a live radio presentation recorded at the local Parque de las Flores on Keyes Street in San Jose, and impressed with what he heard, he decided to make them the foundation of Fama. With his guidance, Los Tigres adopted an electric style, trading in their traditional acoustic sound for one incorporating bass, drums, and electric guitar. The group also adopted a modern approach to songwriting, emphasizing contemporary social themes common to Mexican-Americans.

In the 1980s, Los Tigres moved to Fonovisa Records and furthered their success. Beginning with Jaula De Oro (1984), the group would regularly top the regional Mexican album chart stateside, and this success was acknowledged in 1987 when they won the initial Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Performance, for Gracias America…..Sin Fronteras (1986).

In the diverse world of Latin music, the Regional Mexican genre alone accounts for more than half of all music sales, according to Billboard. This popular genre outpaces the combined sales of Pop, Rock, Tropical, Urban and all other styles, and Los Tigres Del Norte are the undisputed legends of the genre.

The group has more than 500 recorded songs to their credit. Los Tigres del Norte have sold more than 37 million albums worldwide, notching 22 No. 1 albums and more than 50 No. 1 singles. The group has received countless Platinum records and numerous awards including six Grammy and six Latin Grammys, the Latin Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and The Hispanic Heritage “Legends” Awardat The Kennedy Center. They won multiple Premio Lo Nuestro awards, and are the recipients of the BMI ICON Award.

Their unrivaled career spans four decades. Los Tigrescontinues to be at the forefront of Latin music popularity performing regularly to sold-out audiences. Los Tigres Del Norte songs debut at No. 1 on the charts with each album and single they release.

They continue to blaze new trails for the genre and achieve new milestones. In 2013, they were joined by numerous members of Congress at the massive “Camino Americano: Rally & March for Immigrant Dignity & Respect” at the National Mall in Washington, DC. In 2011, the band was featured in “MTV Unplugged: Los Tigres Del Norte & Friends,” the first album to be dedicated to the Regional Mexican genre. The album quickly became a commercial success and went on to earn a rare Diamond sales certification. In 2010, the group headlined Mexico’s Historic Bicentennial Celebration. The group recently released the eagerly-awaited new single La Bala (The Bullet) which is their first new studio recording in four years, and the first advance release of a highly-anticipated new album arriving in October.

Their long-standing career has also garnered the band numerous accolades. Del Norte is the first Mexican group to sing in Spanish on the American Music Awards. The band received The Smithsonian Legacy Award, and were the subject of a Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibit entitled “Corridos Sin Fronteras.” The Spanish group headlined one of the largest concerts in Los Angeles history drawing over 200,000 fans and also performed to a sold-out audience at Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles. Del Norte also appeared in more than 15 films, including Sundance Favorite ‘La Misma Luna’.

In 2000, Los Tigres Del Norte institutionalized their charitable efforts by establishing the Los Tigres Del Norte Foundation to further the appreciation and understanding of Hispanic music, culture, and history through education and community outreach programs. The Foundation donated $500,000 to UCLA’s Chicano Studies Center to create and preserve The Frontera Collection of Mexican and Mexican American Recordings, the world’s largest collection of historical Mexican music recordings. The band also opened a music school for children in need in their home state of Sinaloa, Mexico. These days. Del Norte are staple performers for USO programs to entertain troops abroad in Japan, Korea, Germany and Italy.

Luther Vandross

Luther Vandross Honored Posthumously with
Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Watch Luther Vandross Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony below.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proudly unveiled a posthumous Hollywood Walk of Fame star for the late Luther Vandross. The star was unveiled at 1717 Vine Street overlooking the recording industry’s iconic building Capitol Records. “Luther’s unparalleled voice and forever romantic tunes such as “Never Too Much,” “Power Of Love”, “Here And Now,” “House Is Not A Home,” “So Amazing” and “Dance With My Father” are known the world over,” stated Leron Gubler, President of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and emcee of the ceremonies. “We are honored to hold this dedication for a very special performer whose music will resonate for all time.”

Leron Gubler was joined by Grammy Award Winners Nile Rodgers and Marcus Miller who helped unveil the star for Vandross in the category of Recording at 1717 Vine Street. Accepting the star on behalf of the family was Luther’s niece Seveda Williams and longtime friend Alfonso “Fonzi” Thornton. The star ceremony was streamed live exclusively on www.walkoffame.com.

Since the passing of Luther Vandross in 2005, one constant has remained to define his life and musical success: his unforgettable voice. Amongst the greatest singers of the past 100 years, Luther Vandross’ voice and distinct singing style led to not only monumental success, but to instant recognition when you hear him singing–through your stereo, car radio, on TV or in a movie.

Coupled with that voice, was Luther’s unique ability to write and sing about love and the shared emotions we all feel in that search for and the enjoyment of love. Love of family, friends, that special someone–all were themes Luther explored with his music regularly, reaching many. Through his songs, Luther Vandross became a staple in the most joyous moments of people’s lives.

Luther Vandross was born on April 20, 1951 at Bellevue Hospitalin Manhattan, New York City, United States. He was the fourth child and second son to Mary Ida Vandross and Luther Vandross, Sr.

Luther spent his early years living on the Lower East Sideof Manhattanin New York City in the NYCHAAlfred E. Smith Houses. His mother saw to it that he begin piano lessons when he was only three years old. Luther once stated, “Her influence was incredible, my brother would get a bicycle for Christmas and I would get an Aretha Franklin album!” Luther was also influenced by his sister Pat, who sang in vocal groups in her teens.

Inspired by hearing Dionne Warwick for the first time at the Brooklyn Fox Theater, Luther began writing original songs and started his own vocal group during high school, appearing in local talent shows. After placing 2nd at the famed Amateur Night at Harlem’s Apollo Theater in New York City, Luther joined the theater’s Listen My Brother Revue which opened for Sly and The Family Stone and later appeared on the first two seasons of “Sesame Street” singing ‘Learn Something”, “Count to 20” and “Those Are The ABC’s.”

Honing his signature vocal style and writing skills, Luther went on to attend Western Michigan Universitybefore continuing to pursue a career in music. Already a formidable vocalist and skilled vocal arranger, Luther landed work as a backing singer at top recording sessions.

Luther quickly became one of the best kept secrets in popular music. Few people outside the industry knew his name, but millions heard his remarkable sensual voice on countless commercials. From time to time he made efforts to break out of that lucrative, but restrictive area, either through albums by his own group Luther, or performing on albums from Quincy Jones, Brecker Bros and Bionic Boogie. Many of these were promising recordings, but failed to generate enough momentum to propel Luther to the next level.

A milestone in his career came in 1974, when childhood friend, guitarist Carlos Alomar, invited Luther to Philadelphia to watch a David Bowie session Carlos was playing on. Bowie overheard Luther singinga soulful line he created while listening to the playback of “Young Americans” and asked him to go on mic and record it. Luther’s creation became the famed chorus of Bowie’s hit “Young Americans.” Liking what he heard, Bowie brought Luther into the fold to do vocal arrangements and take charge of his touring vocalists. And for a time, Luther (the group) was Bowie’s opening act. After hearing a Luther original called “Funky Music,” Bowie asked him to rewrite it as “Fascination” and recorded the song on his Young Americans album. Later Bowie introduced Luther to Bette Midler who was equally impressed, leading to Luther doing arrangements for Midler and touring with her as a backing vocalist.

From 1972 through 1980, Luther chalked up credits on albums by such greats as Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, Gary Glitter, Carly Simon, Chaka Khan, Todd Rundgren’s Utopia, Donna Summer, Bette Midler, Chic, and Barbra Streisand. After appearing on two hit records in 1980 by the pop-dance act Change, Epic Records signed Luther Vandross.  In 1981, Luther’sdebut solo album “Never Too Much” was released, and it was quickly apparent that his voice was going to be a lasting presence for generations to come.

For 25 years, from 1981 to 2005, Luther dominated the American R&B music charts like no other artist before or since. In that span, Luther released eight No. 1 R&B albums, seven No. 1 R&B singles and another five Top 20 R&B singles. He achieved crossover status with eight Billboard Top 10 albums, including reaching No. 1 with 2003’s “Dance With My Father,” and another five Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 singles.

From 1981 to 1996, Luther Vandross released an unprecedented 11 consecutive platinum/double platinum albums on CBS/Sony Music’s Epic Records label. At the time of his passing in 2005, 13 of Luther’s 14 studio albums had gone Platinum or multi-platinum.

Overall, Luther received 31 Grammy Award nominations, winning eight times. Additionally, Luther won eight American Music Awards, including Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist seven times.

Luther’s songs have appeared in a vast number of movies, and he contributed original songs for sixteen films, including “Bustin’ Loose,” “The Goonies,” “Ruthless People,” “Made In Heaven,” “House Party,” “Hero,” “Money Train,” “Dr. Dolittle 2” and “Barbershop 2.” Luther’s version of “One Shining Moment” continues to be used every spring as the celebration song for the winning university in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Luther Vandross died on July 1, 2005 in Edison, New Jersey at the age of 54, following complications from a stroke two years earlier. He had been in entertainment for 35 years. His funeral in New York City one week later featured musical tributes by Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Cissy Houston, Usher, and Alicia Keys, along with special remembrances by Patti Labelle, Dionne Warwick and Fonzi Thornton.

Throughout his distinguished career, Luther Vandross was active in charitable causes with the United Negro College Fund and the NY Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, in addition to performing at numerous charity concerts, most notably Michael Jackson’s “Heal The World” concerts in the 1990s.

In 2008, Luther was ranked number 54 on “Rolling Stone” magazine’s List of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2010, Luther was named one of NPR’s 50 Great Voices.

Luther Vandross was a musical master whose style has influenced an entire generation of today’s vocalists. His distinctive brand of satin smooth vocal magic moved international audiences and continues to touch people to this day. Luther Vandross was undeniably one of the most significant vocalists and performers of our time!
