Japanese legendary actor Toshiro Mifune starred in over 150 films during the Golden Age of Japanese Cinema. He is mostly known for his 16 films with director Akira Kurosawa, and has become the archetype of the Samurai. Mifune was born on April 1, 1920 in Chintao, China to a Japanese parents who ran a small photo studio. He spent his childhood in Dailen, China until he was drafted in 1940. Due to his background in photography, he served as an aerial photographer taking pictures of enemy grounds. Later in the war, he became in charge of taking portraits of young pilots before they flew off to their kamikaze missions.

When the war ended, he was dismissed from the Imperial Japanese Army and returned to Japan. Looking for a job as a photographer, Mifune arrived at Toho Studios to apply for a position as a photographer. Ironically, his application was submitted to the acting division and Mifune ended up auditioning for an actor’s position. During the audition, the interviewers made several rude comments about Mifune in order to see his reaction. This made him furious and people who witnessed this, compared him to a ferocious beast trapped in a cage trying to break free. His reputation quickly spread throughout the studio, and rumors eventually reached director Akira Kurosawa, who at the time was already a successful director at Toho Studios. Although Mifune had failed the audition, due to Kurosawa’s request, he was accepted as an understudy. Mifune unhappy about this was convinced to stay in the actor’s division until there was an opening in the photography department.

At age 27, Mifune was selected to play a bandit in the film “Snow Trail,” written by Kurosawa. He was partnered with the veteran actor Shimura Takashi, and Mifune made his debut. After seeing Mifune’s performance, Kurosawa’s belief in Mifune was reassured.

Mifune reached his stardom in Japan after his third film “Drunken Angel,” where he played a struggling gangster with a terminal illness. Kurosawa was in awe of the speed and dynamics of Mifune’s acting.

Following the success of “Drunken Angel,” Mifune officially joined Kurosawa’s team and collaborated in films including “Stray Dog,” “Silent Duel,” and “Rashomon” which won the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival placing Japanese cinema on the map.

Four years after the success of “Rashomon,” Mifune and Kurosawa began working on their Samurai epic “Seven Samurai” which later became their legacy. The role of Samurai pretender which Mifune played, made him filmdom’s Samurai icon.

The collaboration between the two innovators continued and they kept producing powerful films such as “Throne of Blood”, Kurosawa’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” “The Hidden Fortress,” the film which influenced George Lucas’s “Star Wars,” “Yojimbo,” which was remade as Clint Eastwood’s “Fistful of Dollars,” and “Red Beard,” which won Mifune his second best actor award at the Venice film Festival.

After “Red Beard,” Mifune began his international career with the Mexican film called “The Important Man.” The film was nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Foreign Picture. Other films include: John Frankenheimer’s “Grand Prix,” “Hell in the Pacific” with Lee Marvin, “1941” directed by Steven Spielberg, and “Red Sun” co-starring Alain Delon and Charles Bronson.

Mifune was known for his modesty and perfectionist character. He was always the first one on set and was always fully prepared, never bringing his script onto the set. He contributed to the rise of post war Japan giving hope to the citizens through cinema.

Mifune was honored with the Purple Ribbon Award in 1986 and the Sacred Treasure Award in 1993 from the Japanese government.

He was honored by police authorities for his heroism when he rescued stranded civilians during a major flood in 1958 with his private boat.

The incredibly versatile Allison Janney has taken her place among a select group of actors    and seemlessly combines a leading lady’s profile with a character actor’s art of performance. Currently starring alongside Anna Faris in the Chuck Lorre sitcom, “Mom,” Janney received rave reviews for her turn as Margaret Scully on Showtime’s groundbreaking drama “Masters of Sex.” Janney won Emmys for both roles in the same year; a feat that has only been done twice before in Emmy history. She also appeared in Sam Mendes’ “Away We Go,” the comedy “Strangers with Candy,” and was heard as the voice of ‘Gladys’ in Dreamworks’ animated film “Over the Hedge,” as well as “Peach” in “Finding Nemo.

Throughout her career, Janney has made memorable guest-star appearances on television, but she is renowned for her starring role in the acclaimed NBC series “The West Wing,” where she won a remarkable four Emmy Awards and four SAG Awards for her portrayal of White House Press Secretary CJ Cregg.

While a freshman studying acting at Kenyon College in Ohio, Janney auditioned for Paul Newman and got the part. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proudly honored music executive Clarence Avant with the 2,590th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. PDT.

The star in the category of Recording is located at 6363 Hollywood Boulevard next to the star of music producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis who he worked with for many years.

“We are thrilled to add Clarence Avant to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has been an inspiration to many musical performers and has added so much to the history of American music,” stated Leron Gubler, President/CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

Helping Emcee Leron Gubler unveil the star were guest speakers Irving Azoff, Jamie Foxx, Jimmy Jam Harris & Terry Lewis, Quincy Jones and Bill Withers

Clarence Avant is known to many as the “Godfather of Black Music.” Born Clarence Alexander Avant in 1931 in Greensboro, North Carolina, Clarence was one of eight children. He attended a segregated two-room school in Climax, North Carolina until the third grade and then attended school in Goshen, NC (now part of present-day Greensboro, NC) through the eighth grade. He spent his Freshman and Sophomore years at Dudley High School in Greensboro, NC before dropping out at the age of 16. With his drive, determination, street smarts, and an unwavering commitment to success, Avant became one of the entertainment industry’s must successful executives as well as a respected entrepreneur, business advisor, mentor, and civic leader. Avant’s influence spans across the recording and entertainment industry, politics, and both civil rights and charitable endeavors around the world.

Avant’s career in the music industry began in the late 1950s as the manager of Teddy P’s Lounge in Newark, New Jersey, representing blues artist Little Willie John, a frequent act at the lounge. He went on to manage jazz organist Jimmy Smith, jazz producer Creed Taylor, and became familiar with those in the jazz community, including Joseph Glaser, music manager of Louis Armstrong, who served as a strong influence and mentor to Clarence. Avant also represented rock & roll record pioneer Tom Wilson, with whom he partnered in the Wilson Organization. After meeting the then-pianist for Dizzy Gillespie’s band, Argentine composer Lalo Schifrin (best known for film and TV score, such as the theme for Mission Impossible), Joe Glaser encouraged them to work together. As a result, Clarence Avant moved to Los Angeles. As a consultant for MGM Studios, former Motown A & R, William Mickey Stevenson, asked Avant to represent him in a new joint music label with MGM Records’ financial backing, Venture Records. This would become the first joint venture between an African American-owned music company and a major record label. Shortly thereafter, record producer, songwriter, and executive Al Bell enlisted the aid of Avant to sell Stax Records to Gulf & Western in 1968.

Avant formed Sussex Records in Hollywood in 1969. He assembled a slate of artists, including “Sixto” Rodriguez, The Presidents, Bill Withers, Dennis Coffey, The Gallery, Amish, Creative Source, Bill Cosby presents Bad Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral Marching Band, Faith, Hope, & Charity, Lonette McKee, The Soul Searchers, and Phonetic Rock along with other artists in an expansive catalogue. One of Sussex Records’ most successful artists was Bill Withers, whose 1971 LP “Just As I Am” scored a Grammy for the hit single “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Withers’s Withers’ songs, like “Lean on Me” and “Grandma’s Hands,” have been sampled by hip-hop and R&B acts from Big Daddy Kane to Blackstreet.  Later in the 1970s, Avant founded KAGB (Avant Garde Broadcasting), which was one of the first African American owned radio stations in the Los Angeles market. It became a beacon for Black music.

In the early 1970s, KAGB radio station and Sussex Records dissolved. In January 1976, Clarence Avant launched music label Tabu Records. The S.O.S. Bank, Alexander O’Neal, Cherrelle, Brainstorm, Jim Gold, and General Caine were but a few of the artists featured on the Tabu Records roster.

Throughout his career, Avant has advised a broad range of artist and business executives, standing out as a pioneer and mentor for a generation in the music industry. He was the force behind deals with the successful rise of Grammy Award-winning R&B and pop music songwriters and producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who worked with several Tabu Records artist and later, Janet Jackson.

Avant went on to represent Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Antonio “LA” Reid in connection with the launch of the joint venture between their labels, LaFace Records and Arista Records, spawning mega artists such as Toni Braxton. In 1988, with the help of former music promoter Al Haymon, Avant promoted “Bad,” Michael Jackson’s first and only solo world tour.

During the 1990s, Avant served as the Chairman of the Board of Motown Records and was a member of the Board of Directors of PolyGram International. In addition to his music ventures, Avant served as Executive Producer on the film “Save the Children” for the PUSH Foundation; as Executive Producer for the only television show hosted by Muhammad Ali, ABC’s“Wide World of Sports,” and on the PepsiCo African American Advisory Board from 1998-2007.

Avant has participated in a variety of civic, charitable, and business organizations, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Recording Industry Association of America, Apollo Theatre Foundation, Los Angeles World Affairs Council, Inner City Broadcasting Corporation, Qwest Broadcasting, and The Brotherhood Crusade.
