Walter Koenig

Walter Koenig Honored with Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame
Koenig is Final Member of “Star Trek” Television Show awarded Star

View the complete ceremony at the end of this page.

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored Walter Koenig the famous ‘Chekov’ of “Star Trek” with star on the Walk of Fame on September 10, 2012. Emcee Leron Gubler, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, President/CEO and guests Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, Esther Shapiro, and J. Michael Straczynski helped unveil the 2,479th Star in the Category of Television at 6679 Hollywood Boulevard near the star of his friend George Takei.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 14, 1936, Walter Koenig spent his childhood in the Inwood area of Manhattan, New York.  His parents were Russian Jewish immigrants from the Republic of Lithuania in the Soviet Union. He attended New York public grammar schools and graduated from Fieldston High School in Riverdale, NY. He did his first on-stage work in high school with the lead role in both Peer Gynt and Shaw's Devil's Disciple.

Walter's interest in psychiatry prompted him to attend Grinnell College in Iowa with a pre-med major; he later transferred to UCLA. After receiving a BA in psychology, a professor encouraged him to invest in his acting talents and he enrolled in New York's Neighborhood Playhouse.

Walter Koenig's professional acting career spans 50 years of stage, television and film work. He has appeared on television more than 100 times in no less than 42 separate roles. His remarkable talents and range as an actor have won him accolades for roles including everything from a teenage gang leader (Alfred Hitchcock Presents) to a middle-aged Tom Sawyer (The Boys In Autumn).

Koenig was one of the seven main cast members of the original Star Trek television series, airing from 1966-1969. That the series is an iconic part of our television history is without question. Star Trek words and catch phrases have become entrenched in our language, and its fictional technology has inspired actual developments – including cell phones, GPS, air hypos, scanners and the internet itself.

Koenig's character, "Chekov", was more than just another of the "4 supporting crew" on Star Trek. Rather, the Russian character's inclusion in the multi-national crew during the height of the Cold War was a bold milestone in the history of American television, and a trademarkStar Trek's daring vision of a more hopeful future, where we got along with our enemies. In an America gripped by the Cold War and consumed by the Space Race against the Russians, Walter's performance gave viewers a witty, intelligent and dedicated Russian patriot that was nearly impossible to dislike. "Chekov" is best known for his sense of humor, quirky accent and oddball nationalism – which only illustrates that television audiences of the 60's were able to accept his respected, efficient membership in the bridge crew so effortlessly that they forgot the character was one of their most feared enemies: a Russian. The character of "Chekov" was thought so important to the main crew that he was included in the 2009 Star Trek feature film, despite the fact that he was a second season addition to the cast and cements the fact that he was a pivotal character with a resounding acknowledgment by the studio who owns the Star Trek franchise.

A star-studded, two-day celebration is planned to kick off Koenig's Star ceremony. A gala event commenced on September 8, the 46th Anniversary of Star Trek… at the world-famous Egyptian Theater and culminated with a grand banquet and Roast at the Beverly Garland Hotel on September 9.

Walter has the notable and remarkable distinction of adding a second iconic character to the American television lexicon. In the 1990's he again became well-known throughout the world as "Bester" on Babylon 5.   He was both "The man we most love to hate" (1997 poll of 200,000 sci-fi fans) and "The best villain in a series: most evil and complicated character (2006).

In addition to acting, Walter has written five teleplays that were produced for episodic television. He has shared his talents by teaching privately, at UCLA, at the Actor's Alley Repertoire Company, at Sherwood Oaks Experimental Film College and at the California Professional School of Psychology.

Koenig has always been active in the community – lending his name, talents and time to further causes that are close to his heart.  They include the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,   Actors and Others For Animals,   Actors Fund,   Amnesty International, ASPCA, Childrens Hospital USA, City Of Hope, Doctors Without Borders USA, Defenders of Wildlife, Habitat For Humanity, Heal The Bay, International Rescue   Rainforest Action Network,  Plan International USA, Saban Free Clinic, St Vincent Meals On Wheels and the US Campaign for Burma.

Carole King

Hollywood’s Got A Friend
Legendary Songwriter Carole King Honored with
Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Watch the complete LIVE Walk of Fame star ceremony below.

Star Ceremony Coincides with “A Celebration of Carole King and Her Music” Benefit for Paul Newman’s The Painted Turtle Camp

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored the legendary Carole King, one of the music world’s most prolific songwriters, with star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6906 Hollywood Boulevard across the street from The Dolby Theatre. “Carole has written numerous songs that are ingrained in the hearts of many and conger up great memories of times past,” said Leron Gubler, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President and CEO.

Gubler and celebrity guests Kristin Chenoweth and Lou Adler helped King unveil the 2,486th Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Category of Recording on December 3, 2012.

Singer, songwriter, Carole King was born on February 9, 1942 in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn.  King's amazing musical gift was apparent from the time she was a toddler. Already an accomplished pianist by the time she turned 10, King began writing a multitude of songs by her early teens.  She wrote her first #1 hit at the tender age of 17, penning “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” for the Shirelles with then-husband Gerry Goffin. The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period have become part of music legend, but it was 1971’s Tapestry that took King to the pinnacle. It spoke personally to every one of her contemporaries and provided the spiritual musical backdrop to the decade. While King was in the studio recording Tapestry, James Taylor recorded King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” taking the song all the way to #1. In a first for a female writer/artist, Tapestry won all three of the key Grammy Awards—record, song and album of the year—as well as best female vocalist honors for King. With more than 25 million units sold, Tapestry remained the best-selling album by a female artist for a quarter century, and King went on to amass three other platinum and seven gold albums.

King and Goffin were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987 and honored with their Lifetime Achievement Award in 1988. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 as songwriters and were honored by The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2004 with the GRAMMY Trustees’ Award.

King was nominated for an Emmy award in 2000 for “Song of Freedom”.  She was awarded the Songwriter Hall of Fame Mercer Founder Award in 2002.   In 2004 the Library of Congress named Tapestry to the National Recording Registry, which deems sound recordings to be culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.   At the end of the 20th Century, King was named one of the “100 Most Important Women in Rock” by VH1 and was included on virtually everyone’s list of the Most Important Artists / Women / Songs /and Albums of Rock and Roll.

The crowning glory of King’s last half-decade was in April 2012, with the publication of her memoir, A Natural Woman. It debuted on the New York Times bestseller list at #6 and prompted Vanity Fair to say, “America is having a Carole King moment.” As a companion to Carole’s life story, Concord/Hear music released The Legendary Demos with 13 previously unreleased demo recordings, featuring some of her most celebrated songs from 1960-1970. The album is made up of original recordings featuring future standards “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “It’s Too Late,” and “You’ve Got A Friend.”

To date, more than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by more than 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles. She has won countless awards during her  50 + year career. Now 70 and still full of life, Carole King is, without question, the most successful and revered female songwriter in pop music history.

In addition to her continuously-evolving musical career, King, who has lived on an Idaho ranch since the early ’80s, is actively involved with environmental organizations in support of forest wilderness preservation.

*Carole King, Alicia Keys, Amy Grant,  Herb Alpert, John Legend, Katy Perry, Lani Hall,   Darlene Love, Jesse McCartney and Vince Gill will perform at a star-studded evening being billed as “You’ve Got a Friend…A Celebration of Carole King and Her Music” to benefit Paul Newman’s The Painted Turtle camp.  The event is being co-hosted by Quincy Jones and Jack Nicholson.  The magical evening of performances will be held at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre on December 4, 2012.  Ticket sales for the evening, produced by Lou Adler and Kevin Duncan and sponsored by Clear Channel Media & Entertainment Los Angeles and iHeartRadio, are on sale now at www.dolbytheatre.com.

Rick Baker

Award Winning Make-Up Artist Rick Baker Honored With
Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Watch the complete Walk of Fame star ceremony below.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored makeup artist Rick Baker with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today at 11:30 a.m. at 6764 Hollywood Boulevard in front of The Guinness World Records Museum. “We are proud to honor those who have successfully helped make Hollywood what it is today with their talent and magical creations that fans have enjoyed since the beginning of the motion picture industry. Rick Baker is a revered artist who we are proud to say started his extraordinary career in California, home of the movies,” stated Ana Martinez, Producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies.

During the ceremony, which was “Men In Black”-themed with fans and press wearing black, Mr. Baker was also entered into The Guinness World Records™ Book twice – once for the most Oscar®wins, and also for the most Oscar nominations for Best Achievement in Makeup.  He has been nominated a total of twelve times with seven wins: An American Werewolf in London (1981), Harry and the Hendersons (1987), Ed Wood (1994), The Nutty Professor (1996), Men in Black (1997), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) and The Wolfman (2010).

Rick Baker has been an influential force in the creation of creatures and prosthetic makeup for more than 40 years.

Born in Binghamton, New York, the son of Ralph (an artist) and Doris Baker (a bank teller), Baker moved with his family to Southern California at an early age and grew up in Covina.   When he was a child, Baker wanted to be a doctor, but he wanted to be Dr. Frankenstein so he could make monsters.  At 10 years old, he realized that doctors didn't make movie monsters, make-up artists did. His passion was fueled by — in addition to TV monster movies and such shows as “Twilight Zone” and “Outer Limits” — the magazine “Famous Monsters of Filmland” and, particularly, articles by legendary makeup artist Dick Smith. That led to building monster model kits, making his own 8mm version of “Frankenstein,” and eventually erecting his first makeup lab in his bedroom.

Baker’s first professional job came when he was still a teenager at the (Art) Clokey Studios, where he was a puppet designer for the stop-motion animation series Davey and Goliath and Gumby.  When Rick was 18,  he wrote a letter to his idol Dick Smith, who invited him to his house and showed him his makeup lab.  Smith became Baker’s mentor and their continued association culminated in Baker assisting Smith on The Exorcist

Baker honed his craft on early films including Live and Let Die and  TV’s The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, for which Baker won an Emmy.  As his reputation grew within the Hollywood community, he pushed the boundaries of traditional makeup effects by transforming David Naughton into a four-legged, ferocious werewolf in An American Werewolf in London.  Rick’s ingenious use of prosthetics and puppet effects won him an Academy Award® for Outstanding Achievement in Makeup, the debut year of the category.

Garnering a reputation for excellence and resourcefulness, Rick’s assignments became a diverse and iconic collection of creatures including those in Star Wars; Harry and the Hendersons; Michael Jackson’sThriller; Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes; Gorillas in the Mist; Coming to America; Gremlins 2: The New Batch; Men in Black; The Nutty Professor; Mighty Joe Young; andHow The Grinch Stole Christmas, to name but a few.  Last year, Rick won his seventh Academy Award® for his contributions transforming Benicio Del Toro and Sir Anthony Hopkins into werewolves for The Wolfman.

He recently supplied a new population of aliens for Barry Sonnenfeld’s  MEN IN BLACK3.   Thisout-of-this-world 3D adventure will be released November 30 by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment as a Blu-ray 3D™ Combo Pack,  Blu-ray™/DVD Combo Pack and DVD — all with UltraViolet™. Earning more than $624 million at the worldwide box office, this action-packed sci-fi comedy will bereleased for the first time in 3D for the home.

Baker and his wife Silvia are active supporters of Autism Speaks, American Cancer Society, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Friends and Helpers.
