The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proudly honored music executive Clarence Avant with the 2,590th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. PDT.

The star in the category of Recording is located at 6363 Hollywood Boulevard next to the star of music producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis who he worked with for many years.

“We are thrilled to add Clarence Avant to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has been an inspiration to many musical performers and has added so much to the history of American music,” stated Leron Gubler, President/CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

Helping Emcee Leron Gubler unveil the star were guest speakers Irving Azoff, Jamie Foxx, Jimmy Jam Harris & Terry Lewis, Quincy Jones and Bill Withers

Clarence Avant is known to many as the “Godfather of Black Music.” Born Clarence Alexander Avant in 1931 in Greensboro, North Carolina, Clarence was one of eight children. He attended a segregated two-room school in Climax, North Carolina until the third grade and then attended school in Goshen, NC (now part of present-day Greensboro, NC) through the eighth grade. He spent his Freshman and Sophomore years at Dudley High School in Greensboro, NC before dropping out at the age of 16. With his drive, determination, street smarts, and an unwavering commitment to success, Avant became one of the entertainment industry’s must successful executives as well as a respected entrepreneur, business advisor, mentor, and civic leader. Avant’s influence spans across the recording and entertainment industry, politics, and both civil rights and charitable endeavors around the world.

Avant’s career in the music industry began in the late 1950s as the manager of Teddy P’s Lounge in Newark, New Jersey, representing blues artist Little Willie John, a frequent act at the lounge. He went on to manage jazz organist Jimmy Smith, jazz producer Creed Taylor, and became familiar with those in the jazz community, including Joseph Glaser, music manager of Louis Armstrong, who served as a strong influence and mentor to Clarence. Avant also represented rock & roll record pioneer Tom Wilson, with whom he partnered in the Wilson Organization. After meeting the then-pianist for Dizzy Gillespie’s band, Argentine composer Lalo Schifrin (best known for film and TV score, such as the theme for Mission Impossible), Joe Glaser encouraged them to work together. As a result, Clarence Avant moved to Los Angeles. As a consultant for MGM Studios, former Motown A & R, William Mickey Stevenson, asked Avant to represent him in a new joint music label with MGM Records’ financial backing, Venture Records. This would become the first joint venture between an African American-owned music company and a major record label. Shortly thereafter, record producer, songwriter, and executive Al Bell enlisted the aid of Avant to sell Stax Records to Gulf & Western in 1968.

Avant formed Sussex Records in Hollywood in 1969. He assembled a slate of artists, including “Sixto” Rodriguez, The Presidents, Bill Withers, Dennis Coffey, The Gallery, Amish, Creative Source, Bill Cosby presents Bad Brown & The Bunions Bradford Funeral Marching Band, Faith, Hope, & Charity, Lonette McKee, The Soul Searchers, and Phonetic Rock along with other artists in an expansive catalogue. One of Sussex Records’ most successful artists was Bill Withers, whose 1971 LP “Just As I Am” scored a Grammy for the hit single “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Withers’s Withers’ songs, like “Lean on Me” and “Grandma’s Hands,” have been sampled by hip-hop and R&B acts from Big Daddy Kane to Blackstreet.  Later in the 1970s, Avant founded KAGB (Avant Garde Broadcasting), which was one of the first African American owned radio stations in the Los Angeles market. It became a beacon for Black music.

In the early 1970s, KAGB radio station and Sussex Records dissolved. In January 1976, Clarence Avant launched music label Tabu Records. The S.O.S. Bank, Alexander O’Neal, Cherrelle, Brainstorm, Jim Gold, and General Caine were but a few of the artists featured on the Tabu Records roster.

Throughout his career, Avant has advised a broad range of artist and business executives, standing out as a pioneer and mentor for a generation in the music industry. He was the force behind deals with the successful rise of Grammy Award-winning R&B and pop music songwriters and producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who worked with several Tabu Records artist and later, Janet Jackson.

Avant went on to represent Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and Antonio “LA” Reid in connection with the launch of the joint venture between their labels, LaFace Records and Arista Records, spawning mega artists such as Toni Braxton. In 1988, with the help of former music promoter Al Haymon, Avant promoted “Bad,” Michael Jackson’s first and only solo world tour.

During the 1990s, Avant served as the Chairman of the Board of Motown Records and was a member of the Board of Directors of PolyGram International. In addition to his music ventures, Avant served as Executive Producer on the film “Save the Children” for the PUSH Foundation; as Executive Producer for the only television show hosted by Muhammad Ali, ABC’s“Wide World of Sports,” and on the PepsiCo African American Advisory Board from 1998-2007.

Avant has participated in a variety of civic, charitable, and business organizations, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Recording Industry Association of America, Apollo Theatre Foundation, Los Angeles World Affairs Council, Inner City Broadcasting Corporation, Qwest Broadcasting, and The Brotherhood Crusade.

Additionally, Janney co-starred in the feature film “The Help” based on the best-selling novel of the same name. For their extraordinary performances, the cast won Ensemble awards from the Screen Actors Guild, National Board of Review and the Broadcast Film Critics. The film was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Janney has also delighted audiences with outstanding performances in the Oscar®-winning ensemble hit “Juno,” and in the movie version of the Tony Award winning play “Hairspray.” For her role in Todd Solondz’s film “Life During Wartime,” she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress by the Spirit Awards. She also appeared in Sam Mendes’ “Away We Go,” the comedy “Strangers with Candy,” and was heard as the voice of ‘Gladys’ in Dreamworks’ animated film “Over the Hedge,” as well as “Peach” in “Finding Nemo.

Throughout her career, Janney has made memorable guest-star appearances on television, but she is renowned for her starring role in the acclaimed NBC series “The West Wing,” where she won a remarkable four Emmy Awards and four SAG Awards for her portrayal of White House Press Secretary CJ Cregg.

While a freshman studying acting at Kenyon College in Ohio, Janney auditioned for Paul Newman and got the part. Soon after, Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward suggested she study at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. She followed their advice and went on to make her Broadway debut in Noel Coward’s “Present Laughter” for which she earned the Outer Critics Circle Award and Clarence Derwent Award. She also appeared in Arthur Miller’s “A View from the Bridge,” receiving her first Tony Award nomination and winning the Outer Critics Circle Award. Janney was last seen on Broadway in the musical “9 to 5,” for which she earned a Tony nomination and won the Drama Desk Award.

Deidre Hall

Actress Deidre Hall Celebrates 40-Year Career with
Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Watch Deidre Hall Hollywood Walk of Fame Star Ceremony below.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce proudly honored actress Deidre Hall with the 2,581st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, May 19, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. PDT. The star in the category of Television was dedicated at 6201 Hollywood Boulevard in front of Eastown.

Helping Emcee of the Hollywood Walk of Fame and President/CEO of the Hollywood Chamber Leron Gubler to unveil the star was actress Susan Seaforth Hayes. “Soap opera fans are going to be thrilled that their favorite star will be honored on the Walk of Fame,” said Gubler. “Deidre’s long career on television is proof she is a huge fan favorite and we welcome her to Hollywood Boulevard.”

Hall has been adored by fans worldwide for generations. As one of the most recognized and filmed faces throughout her career, Hall holds the distinction of appearing on screen more than any performer in television history. Cherished by millions worldwide as the beautiful Dr. Marlena Evans, Hall has been a driving force in the success of NBC’s longest running scripted daytime drama, Days of Our Lives.

Born in Milwaukee as an identical twin, Hall’s family moved to Lake Worth, Florida, when she was six. Being crowned Junior Orange Bowl Queen at thirteen marked her first formal appearance in front of a large audience. While still in her teens, Hall’s gift for the ad lib garnered her a broadcasting spot on WLIZ-Radio where she hosted her own show interviewing local talent, reporting current events, announcing hurricane reports, and managing daily sign-on and sign-off.

In her late teens, while spending a summer with friends in California, Hall supported herself by modeling and getting bit parts in commercials and television. Her easy ability to connect with others increased her TV work and, in 1976, she got the call that changed her life. NBC’s Days of Our Lives producers had been searching for someone to fill the role of a beautiful, strong-minded, passionate character who fit the empowering social movement of the day, and Hall walked in. With acting classes under her belt, preparation met opportunity and, in typical silver-lining Hollywood fashion the red carpet rolled out to meet her, and Hall was brought on as Dr. Marlena Evans.

Hall’s talent extends into other creative areas as well, such as Little Big Bear, the children’s book she wrote for a richly illustrated educational series by WriteBrain.com. As an advocate of healthy living and positive attitude, she co-wrote the informative, humorous cookbook, Deidre Hall’s Kitchen Close-Up, comprising nutrition tips for those suffering with heart disease, diabetes and obesity. In her latest book, How Does She Do It? A Beauty Book, Hall’s engaging wink-and-a-smile approach pokes fun at her career of being made up, dressed up and photographed from every angle.

Her desire to help others gave Hall the opportunity to be in the driver’s seat on television projects to promote awareness of special-needs children and women’s issues. For example, she holds the distinction of being the first actress to speak out about her fertility struggles and surrogate parenting, depicted in Never Say Never, The Deidre Hall Story, the movie she co-wrote and executive produced about this struggle. Hall’s straight-forward telling of her story helped open doors for women everywhere and initiated a national conversation about fertility. Hall also made television history when her identical twin stepped away from her own Special-Education duties to portray Marlena’s evil twin, Samantha and, several years later in a devious plot twist, the snaggle-toothed, curmudgeonly waitress tries to transform herself into a Marlena look-alike.

Among Hall’s more esoteric screen credits is a live performance with a five-ton pachyderm on television’s Circus of the Stars, which obliged Hall to practice with Elephant Joe, a key member of a traveling circus; as well as the role as a widowed mother of three, starring opposite Wilford Brimley in Lorimar’s Our House, a production frequently honored for its deep family values.

Hall has always believed in making time for community service. She donates all proceeds from her Days of Our Lives calendars and cookbooks to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and all proceeds from her watercolor greeting cards to Wounded Warriors. When her children entered school, Hall joined the school board to improve school lunches, and appealed to members of Congress to renew the Child Nutrition Act, which included her hosting a press conference at the White House. In 2009, Hall traveled with son David to Brazil as an ambassador for Operation Smile.

Barbara Bain

Mission: Accomplished
Actress Barbara Bain Honored with Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Watch Barbara Bain Walk of Fame Star ceremony below,

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored actress Barbara Bain with the 2,579th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 28, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. PDT The star in the category of Television was dedicated at 6767 Hollywood Boulevard in front of The Stella Adler Theatre where Bain studied acting.

Helping Emcee and Hollywood Chamber President/CEO Leron Gubler to unveil the star were Walk of Famers Ed Asner and Dick Van Dyke.

“We are pleased to honor an actress who starred in many different shows and especially in the popular Mission: Impossible, one of the most important franchises in television and movie history,” stated Gubler.

Barbara Bain, three time Emmy® winner (Mission: Impossible), was born in Chicago and attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It is there she discovered her life-long passion: modern dance. Relocating to New York, Bain worked as a fashion model while studying with the master of modern dance, Martha Graham. Further exploring her interest in the performing arts, Bain began her acting training in the private class of the most famous and respected acting teachers, Lee Strasberg. After a successful audition, Bain accepted an invitation to become a member of the legendary Actors Studio.

After studying for 1½ years, Bain was cast in every one of the first three roles for which she auditioned. She also toured 26 cities with the Broadway road company of Paddy Chayefsky’s Middle of the Night, a tour which landed her in Los Angeles. Not long thereafter, she found work on some of the most popular television shows of the day. She appeared opposite Larry Hagman in United Artists’ Harbormaster and Darrin McGavin in the popular Mike Hammer series, and was cast in the recurring role of Karen Wells, love interest of David Janssen, in the seminal private-eye series, Richard Diamond, Private Detective.

Bain continued to appear in numerous television series: Tightrope, The Law and Mr. Jones, Straightaway and Adventures in Paradise. She also had the opportunity to flex her comedy skills in one of the classic The Dick Van Dyke Show, created by Carl Reiner. Bain also shined in her comedic role as Alma Sutton in the spy-comedy, Get Smart, created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. In between these two well-remembered appearances, Bain continued to be in demand, appearing in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, Hawaiian Eye, 77 Sunset Strip, Wagon Train, Ben Casey, My Mother the Car, and Perry Mason.

It was in 1966 that Bain would bring to life the role that would make her an international star. Created by Bruce Geller, Mission: Impossible which is celebrating its 50th anniversary was an espionage-thriller series, the likes of which had never appeared on television. Bain played Cinnamon Carter, a secret agent with beauty (her specialty was distraction) and the brains to match. For this role, Bain would become the first actress in television history to win three consecutive Emmy® awards for Lead Actress in a Dramatic Series, a record that would stand for nearly two decades.

In 1969, Bain appeared in a number of television movies: Murder Once Removed with John Forsythe, Goodnight, My Love directed by Peter Hyams, A Summer Without Boys and Steven Spielberg’s Savage.

In 1973, Bain accepted the invitation from British producers Gerry and Sylvia Anderson to appear in their new television series, Space: 1999, opposite her then-husband Martin Landau and actor Barry Morse ofThe Fugitive fame. Set some twenty-five years in the future, Space: 1999 was, at the time, the most expensive science fiction television series ever produced with feature film quality special effects. Bain appeared in Space: 1999 for two seasons as Doctor Helena Russell, a role that earned her much acclaim and millions more fans worldwide.

Following Space: 1999, Bain continued to make guest appearances in some of television’s hottest shows: The New Mike Hammer, Moonlighting, The Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Murder, She Wrote, My So-Called Life, Walker, Texas Ranger, Millennium, Strong Medicine, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and Likely Suspects. She also appeared in numerous feature films including American Gun (with James Coburn),Skinheads, The Spirit of '76, Forget Me Not, Nothing Special (with Karen Black),Panic (opposite William H. Macy and Donald Sutherland) and the forthcoming Silver Skies with George Hamilton and the late Alex Rocco. Recently, she has appeared in many short films, including Grace, Lost Music, Match Made and Pacific Edge, for which she was awarded Best Actress awards at both the Los Angeles Independent Film Festivaland the Golden Door International Film Festival.

Although Bain continues to work steadily in film and television, it is her stage to which she has dedicated much time. She has garnered Los Angeles Critics Circle and DramaLogue Awards for her acting in such plays as Arthur Kopit’s Wings, Eugene O’Neill’s A Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days and Eugène Ionesco’s The Chairs.

A continuing member of the Actors Studio where she teaches and directs, Bain has also directed numerous plays in 99-seat theater venues in Los Angeles. This June she returns for the 8th year working with the Blank Theatre’s Young Playwrights Festival, mentoring young writers aged 9 to 19 and directing their plays for production on the stage of the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood.

Twenty years ago, Bain founded the SAG Foundation’s (now SAG-AFTRA) BookPALS (Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools) program. She would travel weekly to Grape Street Elementary School in Watts for the next 15 years to read to kindergartners and first graders. Over the years, BookPALS has grown exponentially. Its mission to develop a love of reading and literacy amongst children has become an overwhelming success. Currently over 22,000 actors read in the classroom to 60,000 kids weekly in the United States.
