The Chipmunks first appeared on television in 1961 with “The Alvin Show”, which was one of the first Prime Time animated television series to air on national television. In 1981, The Chipmunks’ Prime Time television special, “A Chipmunk Christmas” aired on NBC and was seen by more than 35 million people, becoming a Holiday perennial. The success of the Christmas special led to a Saturday morning TV series, “Alvin & The Chipmunks”, which aired on NBC from 1983 to 1991,becoming one of the top rated shows in all of children’s programming. Not only did this series feature Alvin, Simon and Theodore, but also it introduced their female counterparts The Chipettes–Brittany, Eleanor and Jeanette.
The show was nominated for five Emmy Awards, was seen by more than 15 million people a week and has been broadcast in over 100 countries around the world.
Given the success of the franchise, The Chipmunks and Chipettes were redesigned for the brand new CG animated television series, ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks. Created, written, designed and directed by Janice Karman, the series launched Spring 2015 and continues to garner top ratings around the world, including on Nickelodeon in the U.S., attracting over 42 million viewers per week in the U.S. alone. Mötley Crüe is an American hard rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1981. The band was founded by bass guitarist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee, who were later joined by lead guitarist Mick Mars and lead singer Vince Neil. Mötley Crüe has sold more than 80 million album copies worldwide, with 25 million in the U.S.
The band members have often been noted for their hard-living lifestyles, and the persona they maintained. All members have had numerous brushes with the law, spent time in jail, suffered from alcoholism, long addictions to drugs, had countless escapades with women, and are heavily tattooed. Their ninth studio album, Saints of Los Angeles, was released on June 24, 2008, while a film adaptation of their best-selling autobiography, The Dirt, is due to be released in 2011.
Mötley Crüe was formed on January 17, 1981 when bass guitarist Nikki Sixx left the band London and began rehearsing with drummer Tommy Lee and vocalist/guitarist Greg Leon. Lee had worked previously with Leon in a band called Suite 19 and the trio practiced together for some time with Leon eventually deciding not to continue. Nikki and Tommy then began a search for new members. Sixx and Lee soon met guitarist Bob "Mick Mars" Deal. Mars was quickly auditioned and subsequently hired by Sixx and Lee. Although a lead vocalist named O'Dean was auditioned, Lee had known Vince Neil from their high school days at Royal Oak High School in Covina, California and the two had performed in different bands on the garage band circuit. On seeing him perform with the band Rock Candy at the Starwood in Hollywood, California, Mars suggested they have Neil join the band. At first Neil refused the offer, but as the other members of Rock Candy became involved in outside projects, Neil grew anxious to try something else. When Lee made one final appeal to audition, Neil accepted and was hired. The newly formed band did not yet have a name. While trying to find a suitable name, Mars remembered an incident which occurred when he was playing with a band called White Horse, when one of the other band members called the group "a motley looking crew." He had remembered the phrase and later copied it down as Mottley Cru-. After modifying the spelling slightly, "Mötley Crüe" was eventually selected as the band's name, with the stylistic decision suggested by Neil to add the two sets of metal umlauts supposedly inspired by the German beer Löwenbräu, which the members were drinking at the time.
The band soon met their first manager, Allan Coffman, "the thirty-eight-year-old brother-in-law of Mick?s driver friend Stick". The band's first release was the single "Stick to Your Guns/Toast of the Town", which was released on their own record label, Leathür Records, which had a pressing & distribution deal with Greenworld Distribution in Torrance, California. In November 1981, their debut album Too Fast for Love was self-produced and released on Leathür, selling 20,000 copies. Coffman's assistant Eric Greif set up a tour of Canada, while Coffman and Greif used Mötley Crüe's success in the Los Angeles club scene to negotiate with several record labels, eventually signing a recording contract with Elektra Records in late spring 1982. At Elektra's insistence, the debut album was then re-mixed by producer Roy Thomas Baker and re-released on August 20, 1982, two months after its Canadian Warner Music Group release using the original Leathür mixes, to coincide with the tour.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that entertainer Marla Gibbs was honored with the 2,6978th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, July 20, at 11:30 a.m. PST. The star was dedicated in the category of Television at 6840 Hollywood Boulevard in front of Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Rana Ghadban, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce unveiled the star with Tisha Cambell and Norman Lear.
Marla Gibbs, a native of Chicago, Illinois, has carved her place on the international stage as a loved celebrity.
She began studying acting at PASLA (Performing Arts Society of Los Angeles). Ironically, Gibbs would eventually open a theater and school with her daughter on the same block years later. She went on to hone her craft at the Mafundi Institute and Watts Writers Workshop. She immediately loved the theater and went on to appear in a number of local productions including “Medea,” “The Amen Corner” and “The Gingerbread Lady,” before landing her first film role in “Black Belt Jones.”
A five-time Emmy-nominated actress, Gibbs is known for her memorable portrayal of the maid, Florence, on the CBS hit comedy, “The Jeffersons.” Gibbs’ talent soon won her another hit sitcom, the NBC series, “227.” She developed the sitcom from the original stage play of the same title produced by her daughter, Angela and cut her teeth as Executive Producer on the show.
Gibbs’ voice has been heard on the animated TV series, “101 Dalmatians.” She has appeared on popular shows including “This Is Us,” “Young Sheldon, “ “Days of Our Lives,” “The Carmichael Show,” ”Blackish,” “NCIS,” The Neighborhood and the list goes on. She’s enjoyed recurring roles on “Passions” and the “The Hughleys,” and gave a stellar performance in the critically acclaimed film, “The Visit.” The same is true for the film, “El Camino,” “and her tour de force portrayal of a jazz legend in, “Stanley’s Gig,” that won her critical notice.
Gibbs’ first love has always been singing. She sang and co-wrote the theme song to the sitcom, “227,” and “Checking In” and in 2006, she released her own CD, “It’s Never Too Late.” The project partnered her with the legendary HB Barnum and her friend, the late jazz luminary, Gerald Wiggins. Gibbs wrote most of the songs including two with producer, Amil Gibbs. Her message is all there, on the CD… “It’s Never too Late.”
An activist, Marla always fought to ensure diversity was not only in front of the camera but behind it as well. She stood her ground when top executives wanted her to play a single mother on the show. Her vision won out and “227” became a hit show where audiences could find two loving parents raising their daughter and dealing with real issues. Gibbs has been honored as both a maverick and living legend. An eight-time NAACP Image Award winner, Gibbs has received numerous prestigious honors over the years, including Essence Magazine’s Woman of the Year.
In addition to acting, her community support has been celebrated with several awards. She revived the legendary Los Angeles jazz supper club, “Marla’s Memory Lane, and hired local and international jazz artists to help preserve the culture. Marla co-founded Crossroads Theater and Acting school with her daughter Angela, which helped to launch the careers of several local actors. Gibbs’ universal appeal, versatility and tremendous career success spanning film, live performances and television have solidified her standing as one of the premier entertainers in the world.
