Songwriters Holland Dozier Holland Honored with Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored songwriters and producers Holland-Dozier-Holland with the 2,543rd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, February 13, 2015. The star in the category of Recording was dedicated near the Live Nation Building at 7070 Hollywood Boulevard. “We are so happy to honor these musical geniuses with their well-deserved star on the Walk of Fame very fittingly during Black History Month,” stated Walk of Fame Producer Ana Martinez. “Their music has and will continue for decades to be a part of American music history.”

Helping emcee and Hollywood Chamber President/CEO Leron Gubler to unveil the star will be Berry Gordy, Founder of Motown and Mary Wilson, former member of The Supremes.

Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland wrote and produced many of the songs that are most closely identified with Motown, including such classics as “Stop! In the Name of Love” and “You Can’t Hurry Love” (the Supremes), “Heat Wave” and “Jimmy Mack” (Martha and the Vandellas), “Reach Out I’ll Be There” and “Baby I Need Your Loving” (the Four Tops), and “Can I Get a Witness” and “How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You” (Marvin Gaye), among many others from their Hitsville tenure. In their behind-the-scenes roles as staff producers and songwriters, Holland-Dozier-Holland was as responsible as any of the performers for Motown’s spectacular success.

Holland, Dozier and Holland were all born in Detroit: Brian Holland on February 15, 1941; Lamont Dozier on June 16, 1941, and Eddie Holland on October 30, 1939. Their relationship with Motown founder Berry Gordy dates back to 1958, before he started the famous Motown Company. Eddie Holland’s recording debut, a 1958 Mercury single, “You,” was one of Gordy’s earliest productions. Gordy also produced some sessions for Brian Holland, while in 1961, Lamont Dozier began recording for Anna Records, owned by Gordy’s sister Gwen.

Holland, Dozier and Holland inaugurated their collaboration in 1962, with the single “Dearest One,” released under Dozier’s name on the Mel-O-Dy label, a Motown subsidiary. The formation of the team was a logical outcome and their workplace was a tiny recording studio in a converted garage at Motown’s “Hitsville U.S.A.” offices.

In short order, Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote and produced Martha and the Vandellas’ “Come and Get These Memories,” which went to No. 3 on the R&B chart and No. 29 on the pop chart in 1963. That same year, the trio also wrote and produced Marvin Gaye’s “Can I Get a Witness,” the Marvelettes’ “Locking Up My Heart” and “Forever,” the Miracles’ “I Gotta Dance to Keep from Crying” and “Mickey’s Monkey,” and Martha and the Vandellas’ “Heat Wave” and “Quicksand.”

All of those songs preceded the trio’s record-breaking success with the Supremes. In June 1964, “Where Did Our Love Go” became the first of six consecutive No. 1 singles for the Supremes and Holland, Dozier and Holland.

The trio epitomized the Motown sound: a fluid, up-tempo style that combined catchy lyrics with the fervor of gospel, the groove of R&B and the polish of pop. More than 50 of Motown’s most memorable songs can be attributed to Holland-Dozier-Holland. They produced hits for nearly every act on the Motown family of labels.

The trio left Motown  in 1968 to found their own Invictus/Hot Wax label, where they continued their hit-making ways with Freda Payne’s “Band of Gold,” Chairman of the Board’s “Give Me Just a Little More Time,” and the Honey Cones’ “Want Ads.” The sound of those records – with syncopated rhythm guitars and gospel-inflected vocal arrangements delivering catchy lyrics – was as distinctive as their Motown classics.

When Invictus/Hot Wax folded in 1973, Dozier returned to his performing career, resulting in a string of solo records that continues to be sampled by artists ranging from Lil Wayne to Linkin Park. He continues to achieve success and accolades as an artist, producer, songwriter and most recently USC professor.

In the 70s, the Hollands wrote and produced for a number of artists, including the Supremes and Michael Jackson.  In 1988, the Holland brothers founded the Holland Group production company and revived their label Music Merchant. They continue to release material from their classic catalog as well as new material.

Holland-Dozier-Holland have reunited for the first time in more than 30 years to write the score for the brand new musical version of The First Wives Club, based on the best-selling novel and the hit 1996 film. The score includes brand-new, original songs along with Holland-Dozier-Holland classics “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Stop! In the Name of Love” and “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch).” The musical begins its pre-Broadway World Premiere run at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre on February 17 and runs through March 29. Holland, Dozier and Holland were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1988 and in 2003, they were named BMI Icons at the 51st BMI Pop Awards. In 2009 they received the Songwriters Hall of Fame very prestigious Johnny Mercer Award.

Peter Falk

Actor Peter Falk Honored with a Posthumous Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Watch the complete star ceremony as the Hollywood Chamber helps unveil the star for Peter Falk below.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored the late Peter Falk a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on July 25, 2013. “Peter Falk was one of Hollywood’s most beloved character actors,” stated Leron Gubler, President & CEO for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “We are proud to honor him with his star and keep his legacy alive for fans from around the world.”

Accepting the star on behalf of Falk family is long-time friend and Walk of Famer Joe Mantegna. Emcee Gubler and guest speakers Ed Begley, Jr. and Paul Reiser and Mantegna will help unveil the 2,503rd Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the category of Television at 6654 Hollywood Boulevard.

Film and television actor Peter Falk started his career on stage in 1955. From 1958 he enjoyed modest success in such films as The In-Laws (1979) and in various television dramas. He usually played urban types, such as gangsters or working-class men, in which he employed his rough-hewn mannerisms to create a beloved character.

Peter Michael Falk was born on September 16, 1927, in New York City. While he had many roles on stage and on the big screen, Peter Falk is probably best remembered for his portrayal of Lieutenant Columbo on television. He played the rumpled and quirky detective for more than 30 years in numerous television movies.

Falk grew up in Ossining, New York. After high school and a brief stay at college, Falk became a merchant marine, working as a cook. He later went back to school, eventually earning a master’s degree from Syracuse University in public administration.

Falk discovered acting in his twenties while working in Hartford. At the age of 29, he abandoned public service for the stage. Falk moved to New York City and made his off-Broadway debut in 1956 in a production of Don Juan. In 1958, he made the leap to film, appearing in the drama Wind Across the Everglades with Christopher Plummer and Gypsy Rose Lee. Falk soon became a notable character actor, often playing shady criminals. For Murder Inc. (1960),   he picked up an Academy Award® nomination for his portrayal of a notorious thug. Falk received another Best Supporting Actor nod the following year for Pocketful of Miracles, for his comic turn as a mobster.

In 1967, Falk won his most famous part after Bing Crosby turned down the role. He first appeared as Lieutenant Columbo in the 1968 television movie Prescription: Murder. In 1971, Columbo became a regular feature on the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie. He received four Emmy Awards for his work on the popular television movies. With his disheveled appearance and tattered trench coat, Columbo came across as the perennial underdog. “He looks like a flood victim,” Falk once said. “You feel sorry for him. He appears to be seeing nothing, but he’s seeing everything.”

In addition to Columbo, Falk enjoyed success on the stage and in film. He starred on Broadway in Neil Simon's The Prisoner of Second Avenue in 1971. Working with director John Cassavetes, Falk played Gina Rowland’s husband in the critically-acclaimed A Woman Under the Influence (1976). He also appeared in several popular comedies, including Murder by Death (1977) and The In-Laws in 1981. One of his favorite on-stage roles was opposite his long-time friend Joe Mantegna in David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize winning play Glengarry Glen Ross in 1986.

Falk continued to work during the next two decades, often in small, but memorable, supporting roles, such as “grandpa” in The Princess Bride (1987). He made his last appearance as Columbo in a 2003 television movie “Columbo Like The Nightlife.” Peter continued to work up to 2009, lending his voice to the animated Dreamworks film Shark Tale and staring films such as Three Days in Vegas with Rip Torn and George Segal and The Thing About my Folks written by Paul Reiser.

On June 23, 2011, Falk died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home, he was 83 years old.

Jack Black was born Thomas Jacob Black in Santa Monica, California. He attended the University of California at Los Angeles. Black has cemented himself as one of the most versatile and sought-after talents in entertainment with multiple high-profile projects in the works. He will next be seen starring opposite Cate Blanchett in Amblin’s The House with a Clock in its Walls, set for release on September 21st. This fall, he will be touring with his band, Tenacious D, for their new album, Post-Apocalypto. Their first feature film, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, was released in November 2006 and went down like an exploding Led Zeppelin – the sickening thud of failure reverberated throughout the entertainment industry. But they climbed and clawed their way back in 2012 with the most powerful comeback album in the history of recorded music with “Rize of the Fenix”.

In 2013, Black and Gass founded Festival Supreme, an annual music and comedy festival that returned for its fourth year in October 2016.

Elder was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. He received a B.A. in Political Science from Brown University in 1974, and graduated from University of Michigan, School of Law in 1977. “Weird Al” Yankovic

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Honors ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic with Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Grammy-winning Musical Satirist Announces 2019 Orchestra Tour
Watch the ceremony as the Hollywood Chamber help “Weird Al” Yankovic unveil the Walk of Fame star below.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored performer “Weird Al” Yankovic with the 2,643rd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday, August 27, 2018. The star was dedicated in the category of Recording at 6914 Hollywood Boulevard across the street from the TCL Chinese Theatre.

“Weird Al has single-handedly created an industry of parody! His fans have been waiting for this star for a very long time. We are excited to honor this very funny man on our world-famous Hollywood Walk of Fame,” stated Ana Martinez, Producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies.

Helping Emcee Leron Gubler, President & CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to unveil the star were Dr. Demento and Thomas Lennon.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce which administers the popular star ceremonies encourages people who are unable to attend and fans around the world to watch the event exclusively on www.walkoffame.com.

Few would have guessed that “Weird Al” Yankovic – who as a shy, accordion-playing teenager got his start sending in homemade tapes to the Dr. Demento Radio Show – would go on to become a pop culture icon and the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time, with classic song and music video parodies such as“Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise,” “White & Nerdy” and “Word Crimes.” Now in his fourth decade as America’s foremost song parodist, he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including four Grammys® (out of fifteen total nominations) and a string of Gold and Platinum albums.

In 2015 and 2016, Weird Al’s Mandatory World Tour encompassed 200 shows throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia, including two nights at the Hollywood Bowl and a sold-out gig at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. So far this year, Weird Al performed 77 shows as part of his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, where he and his bandmates of over 35 years played set lists comprised almost entirely of his original non-parody material, and without any of their signature high-octane production (no costumes, props or giant video screens). And in 2019, Weird Al will follow up his most bare-bones tour with his most extravagant tour ever, Strings Attached, where he and his band will be backed every night by a full orchestra.

Weird Al’s 14th studio album, the Grammy® award-winning Mandatory Fun (2014), became the first comedy album in history to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and the first ever to reach the top of the chart since 1963. Yankovic set the U.S. record on Spotify for having the most tracks from one album in the viral top 10 at one time, taking the top four spots. In addition, his single “Word Crimes” debuted in the Billboard Top 40, making Weird Al one of only four artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades along with Michael Jackson, Madonna and U2.

Al has remained active as a recording artist. June 2017 saw the release of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Dreamworks), for which Al co-wrote and performed the film’s theme song. In 2017, Al wrote and performed “The North Korea Polka (Please Don’t Nuke Us)” for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO). That same year, Legacy Recordings released Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of “Weird Al” Yankovic, a remastered 15-disc box set (including a rarities album) plus a 120-page book of archival photos, all housed in a replica of Weird Al’s trademark accordion. Al also recorded cover versions of the Squidbillies theme for Adult Swim and the Ramones’ “Beat on the Brat” for a Dr. Demento compilation album, and he produced remixes of two hit singles for Portugal: The Man (“Feel It Still” and “Live in the Moment”). In March 2018, Al delivered “The Hamilton Polka,” a frantic tour de force mash-up of 14 songs from the Broadway smash, commissioned by Lin-Manuel Miranda and released as part of “Hamildrops” series.

In addition to his cult-hit feature film UHF (1989), his late ‘90s CBS Saturday morning series The Weird Al Show and numerous AL-TV specials he has made for MTV and VH1 over the years, Yankovic has remained a staple of film and television, from appearances on The Simpsons, 30 Rock, The Goldbergs andHow I Met Your Mother to performing live on the Primetime Emmy Awards and starring in his own concert specials for Disney, VH1 and Comedy Central. In 2015, Yankovic took over as co-host and bandleader for the fifth season of IFC’s Comedy Bang! Bang! Currently, Al can be heard as the voice of the title character in Disney Channel’s animated series Milo Murphy’s Law. His other voice acting work includes appearances on Bojack Horseman, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Wander Over Yonder, and the DC animated feature Batman vs. Robin).

Yankovic added “New York Times bestselling author” to his resumé in 2011 with the release of his children’s book, When I Grow Up (HarperCollins), followed two years later by My New Teacher and Me! An animated series based on his children’s books is currently being developed in partnership with the Jim Henson Company. In 2012, Yankovic released Weird Al: The Book (Abrams), an illustrated hardcover on his life and career. The same year, Yankovic became not only MAD Magazine’s cover boy, but the first guest editor in their 63-year history.

In 2017, NECA Toys released the second in its line of retro-clothed Weird Al action figures, and in 2018 Funko released two of its own POP! vinyl figures.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored actress Sofia Vergara with the 2,551st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, May 7, 2015. The star in the category of Television was dedicated at 7013 Hollywood Boulevard in front of Marshalls Department store. “The Hollywood Chamber is proud to add some spice to the Hollywood Walk of Fame by immortalizing Sofia Vergara’s fame onto our iconic Walk of Fame. Vergara adds coveted diversity to our Walk of Fame institution. We also think putting her star next to the star of TV husband Ed O’Neill is an added value for fans of their show to enjoy,” stated Ana Martinez, Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremonies.

Helping emcee and Hollywood Chamber President/CEO Leron Gubler to unveil the star were actor Eric Stonestreet and “Modern Family” Co-creator/Executive Producer Steve Levitan.

Discovered on the beaches of Barranquilla, Colombia, Vergara began her career in a Pepsi-Cola commercial and history was made. World renowned as one of the funniest and sexiest stars today, Sofia Vergara is an Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominated actress. She can currently be seen as ‘Gloria Delgado-Pritchett’ in the five-time Emmy winner for Outstanding Comedy Series “Modern Family,” which airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.

Vergara will soon be seen opposite Reese Witherspoon in New Line Cinema’s and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ buddy comedy “Hot Pursuit,” distributed by Warner Bros Pictures. The film is slated for release on May 8th, the day after Vergara’s star induction ceremony. Vergara is also an executive producer on the film.

Vergara’s recent film appearances include starring opposite Woody Allen and Sharon Stone in John Turturro’s “Fading Gigolo” as well as co-starring in Open Road Films’ “Chef” with Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. and Simon West’s “Wild Card” with Jason Statham. Both “Fading Gigolo” and “Chef” posted one of the year’s best specialty box-office openings.

Vergara got her break in Disney’s comedy “Big Trouble” and since then has starred in films such as “Smurfs,” “Happy Feet 2,” “New Year’s Eve,” “Four Brothers” and Tyler Perry’s box office sensations “Meet The Browns” and “Madea Goes To Jail.”

On stage in 2009, Vergara earned rave reviews when she debuted in the Broadway production of “Chicago” as ‘Mama Morton.’

In the Hispanic market, some of her past TV credits include “Fuera de Serie” as well as her special guest appearance on 2008’s highest rated Spanish language soap opera, “Fuego en la Sangre” on Univision. Additionally, she executive produced the Spanish version of “Desperate Housewives.” The entertainment trade papers have also named her one of the most talented and powerful women in Hispanic entertainment.

Along with the recognition she has earned for her acting career, Vergara is also considered a successful entrepreneur with an especially strong celebrity brand. Being able to successfully cross over from her original audience of Hispanic consumers and spread her influence across all demographics, is something Vergara does on a daily basis with her retail lines, which range from furniture to hair care and fragrance and more appeal to virtually every demographic. She has a collection for Kay Jewelers called ‘So Sofia’ and her fragrance, Sofia by Sofia Vergara, launched last May and her second fragrance will be launched globally later this summer.

In 1994, Vergara founded Latin World Entertainment with business partner Luis Balaguer. Latin World Entertainment has grown from a management agency for top Hispanic talent to a multi-service company offering a 360° approach, and currently is the premier Hispanic talent management and entertainment marketing firm in the United States. The company represents the biggest stars, opinion-makers and trendsetters in the Spanish-speaking entertainment world, and leverages that star power to take brands and products directly into the growing Hispanic market.

In addition to her success as an actress and entrepreneur, Vergara is also committed to being active through various philanthropic endeavors. Special Apollo XI

In the early 1970s, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored the Apollo XI mission and the U.S. astronauts who landed on the moon on July 20, 1969 with a uniquely-designed special award in the category of Television as a tribute to the first televised Walk on the Moon.

On the four sidewalk corners at the intersection of Hollywood and Vine, four similar commemorative dedications mark the Apollo XI Mission within moon-like circular plaques. Each plaque contains the names of Commander Neil A. Armstrong, Lunar Module Pilot Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., Command Module Pilot Michael Collins – the astronauts who were aboard the spaceflight that landed the first two people who walked on the Moon. The circular plaques include the date of the first Moon landing 7/20/69, and name of the mission Apollo XI. On the plaques, the moons are in silver and grey terrazzo circles rimmed in brass on a square pink terrazzo background, with the television emblem inlaid at the top of each circle.

Apollo 11 astronauts Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon in 1969, and Michael Collins orbited above the moon. “The telecast from the moon was the single most-important live TV broadcast ever!” said Ana Martinez, Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “The bronze markers were set in all four corners of the intersection within the terrazzo sidewalks to represent their reach to the four corners of the world,” Martinez said.

They had accomplished what no one else had ever done, ad Armstrong spoke to NASA in Texas, stating, “Houston, Tranquilitybase here. The Eagle has landed.” Hours later, as hundreds of millions of TV viewers watched around the globe, Armstrong stepped his foot on the moon and uttered these famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” When Aldrin stepped down the ladder, he exclaimed, “Magnificent destination.” Collins’ important job kept him in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia. He was not able to join the moonwalkers who made U.S. citizens feel a patriotic swell as they spiked an American flag into the Moon’s dusty surface. Then, they read these words off a plaque mounted on the Eagle: “Here men from the planet Earth first step foot upon the Moon, July, 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.” The Eagle would not return to Earth, it had found a permanent new home in a very exclusive neighborhood, on the Sea of Tranquility.

This was the single most important live TV broadcast ever! So many people watched this event, that the streets throughout the entire country were empty – and it was quiet elsewhere in the world. This was the longest continuous live TV coverage in history which lasted for 31 hours.

The moon on the northwest corner is flanked by the Walk of Fame stars of Carl Laemmle, Jo Stafford, Marilyn Miller, and Artie Shaw. The moon on the northeast corner is flanked by the Walk of Fame stars of James Stewart, Edward R. Murrow, Wendy Barrie, and Kirk Douglas. The moon on the southeast corner is flanked by the Walk of Fame stars of Maria Callas, Gladys Swarthout, Donald O’Connor, and Julius La Rosa. The moon on the southwest corner is flanked by the Walk of Fame stars of Constance Talmadge, Blanche Thebom, Hank Mann, and Rex Ingram.

On July 20, 1999, these awards were rededicated in the honor of the 30th anniversary of landing on the moon and the famous lunar walk!
