ABOUT OUR HONOREE

“The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome James L. Brooks to the Hollywood Walk of Fame," stated Ana Martinez, Walk of Fame Producer. "James has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry, and we are honored to celebrate his huge contributions with a star on the Walk of Fame," added Martinez.

James L. Brooks is a three-time Academy Award-winner, twenty-two-time Emmy Award-winner and four-time Peabody Award winner. He is a director, producer, screenwriter, and founder of Gracie Films.

A towering figure in both television and film, Brooks is best known for co-creating iconic television series like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, and The Simpsons, as well as for his acclaimed work on films such as Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, and As Good as It Gets.

Brooks began his career as an usher at CBS before writing for the network’s news broadcasts. In 1965, he moved to Los Angeles to work on David L. Wolper's documentaries. His first major success came when he created Room 222. In 1970, Grant Tinker hired Brooks and producer Allan Burns at MTM Productions, where they co-created the groundbreaking comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Brooks and Burns also developed two successful spin-offs: the comedy Rhoda and the drama Lou Grant.

In 1978, Brooks co-created Taxi, winner of the Emmy for Best Comedy 3 years in a row and then transitioned to feature films. His film debut came with Starting Over, which he wrote and co-produced. The film earned two Oscar nominations for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role. His next project, Terms of Endearment, earned him three Academy Awards for writing, directing, and producing, and resulted in Oscars for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor. Brooks continued his success with Broadcast News and As Good as It Gets, both of which garnered widespread praise. Each film earned seven Academy Award nominations, and As Good as It Gets took home two wins for Best Actor and Best Actress. Other notable films he produced include BIG, Penny Marshall’s first directing effort; Say Anything…, Cameron Crowe’s first directing effort; The War of the Roses; Bottle Rocket; "Are You There God, it's me Margaret?" written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig; Jerry McGuire written and directed by Cameron Crowe; and James wrote and directed Spanglish and How Do You Know?

In 1986, Brooks founded Gracie Films. The first show produced was The Tracey Ullman Show, which received 29 Emmy nominations and eight wins over the course of its run. During this time, Matt Groening created The Simpsons, developed by Brooks and Sam Simon. The show became a cultural phenomenon, winning numerous awards and is now in its 37th season with more to come. Brooks co-produced and co-wrote The Simpsons Movie in 2007, further cementing the franchise’s legacy.

Throughout his career, Brooks has demonstrated a unique ability to balance heartfelt storytelling with sharp humor. His later projects include producing The Edge of Seventeen, a coming-of-age film directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, and Icebox, a Spanish-language HBO film about a young asylum seeker.

Looking ahead, Brooks will release his newest project, Ella McCay, which he wrote, produced, and directed. The film is a comedy about the complicated politics that arise when a young woman’s stressful career clashes with her chaotic family life. Ella McCay is set to release on December 12, 2025.

With a legacy spanning over six decades, James L. Brooks remains one of the most influential figures in entertainment, celebrated for his unparalleled contributions to both television and film. In 2006 he received the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence from the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) and his recent induction as a Disney Legend in 2024 underscores his significant impact on the world of storytelling and entertainment.
