ABOUT OUR HONOREE
“The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome Dodger Orel Hershiser to the Hollywood Walk of Fame," stated Ana Martinez, Walk of Fame producer. “It seems only fitting that Orel’s star will shine at 6755 Hollywood Boulevard. The ‘55’ honors the jersey number that became synonymous with one of the greatest Dodgers of all time, while the ‘67’ is a number that carries its own legendary story.
Hershiser holds the Major League Baseball Record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched at 59; A record that has stayed in the Dodger Family Since Don Drysdale had it (58 2/3 Innings) since 1968.
Some will remember that he pitched 8 additional scoreless innings in the 1988 National League Championship Series against a Mets Team that was considered one of the most prolific offenses in the 80's. Hence, 67. 6755 Hollywood Blvd!” added Martinez.
In 2014, the iconic Vin Scully was nearing the final years of his legendary broadcasting career. At the same time, the Los Angeles Dodgers launched SportsNet LA—a television industry game-changing 24/7 team-dedicated channel. One iconic name was circled to meet at this convergence, a name that would give the audience comfort in Scully’s transitionary years and concurrently help give a fledgling network credibility: Orel Hershiser.
Hershiser established himself during a 13-year playing career with the Dodgers as one of baseball’s greatest players—a record-breaking, award-winning ace. In 1988, Hershiser became the star of one of baseball’s all-time great true Hollywood stories. The dominantly right-handed pitcher helped lift an underdog Dodger team to a World Series championship against the mighty Oakland A’s, in one of the most dramatic victories in the Fall Classic’s history.
Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer Bob Costas, broadcasting for NBC, called the Dodgers one of the worst lineups in World Series history. But the Dodgers had the game’s best pitcher. Hershiser, in 1988, became a transcendent figure—the Cy Young Award winner, National League Championship and World Series MVP, and Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year. Hershiser was now one of the most recognizable athletes in the country.
After his Major League career ended in 2000, he parlayed his credibility, face and name recognition, and likeability into a broadcasting career that has now spanned two decades. Hershiser is an Emmy Award-winning and multi-time Southern California Sports Broadcasters Association award-winning broadcaster and baseball analyst.
Hershiser has called games of the dreamers, the Major League hopefuls, and Major Leaguers. Throughout the first decade of this century, he was the color analyst for ABC/ESPN’s coverage of the Little League World Series. From 2007-2013, ABC/ESPN called on Hershiser to be their trusted voice for the NCAA College World Series. From 2010 to 2013, Hershiser broadcasted baseball’s game of the week for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Next, he helped launch a network for the Dodgers with SportsNet LA, where he and play-by-play prodigy Joe Davis have formed one of the sport’s most entertaining and knowledgeable duos.
This champion, during his incredible sports and broadcasting career, has championed numerous causes. For nearly two decades, he has supported cystic fibrosis charities. Hershiser has led his own faith-based nonprofit (The Hershiser Family Foundation), led on pet adoption initiatives, and has often been front-facing for Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation fundraising efforts and active in supporting Dodgers community relations programming. Additionally, he is a published author, having co-authored or authored two books: Out of the Blue and Between the Lines: Nine Things Baseball Taught Me About Life.
For all he has done—including an illustrious broadcasting career to go along with a remarkable playing career—he became the seventh inductee in 2023 into the Legends of Dodger Baseball, one of the organization’s greatest honors. Orel Hershiser has been one of the most beloved and well-rounded stars in the city of stars. He is a star worthy of one other honor—Hollywood immortality.
