A Hollywood legend in the making, Gwyneth Paltrow has defied the odds by remaining one of today's most prolific and celebrated actors in the ever-changing film industry. A testament to her undeniable talent, her role in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE catapulted her into awards stardom with Best Actress honors at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Academy Awards. Her career has been studded with both critically-acclaimed independents and studio blockbusters that have made her a fixture for this generation's film audience.
Paltrow will next be seen in Sony Screen Gems’ highly-anticipated COUNTRY STRONG in which Gwyneth plays country crooner Kelly Canter opposite music sensation, Tim McGraw. The film, directed by Shana Feste, was shot in America’s music capitol, Nashville, Tennessee and features original country songs sung by Paltrow. The film will be released by Screen Gems nationwide on January 7, 2011. She was most recently seen in Jon Favreau’s box office hit IRON MAN 2, in which she returned as Tony Stark’s personal secretary and confidant, Virginia “Pepper” Potts. Other recent film credits include James Gray’s romantic drama TWO LOVERS opposite Joaquin Phoenix for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination. She also appeared in her brother Jake Paltrow’s directorial debut, THE GOOD NIGHT. Paltrow played the role of the wife of a former pop star who’s been reduced to writing jingles alongside co-stars Penelope Cruz and Danny Devito.
Additional credits include John Madden’s PROOF, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination; SYLVIA, in which she portrayed the famous poet Sylvia Plath; Ryan Murphy’s RUNNING WITH SCISSORS; Douglas McGrath’s INFAMOUS; THE WORLD OF TOMORROW; Neil LaBute's POSSESSION; Wes Anderson’s THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS; Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s SHALLOW HAL; THE ANNIVERSARY PARTY; Bruce Paltrow’s DUETS; BOUNCE opposite Ben Affleck; Anthony Mighella’s THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY; Andrew Davis’
A PERFECT MURDER; SLIDING DOORS; Douglas McGrath’s EMMA; GREAT EXPECTATIONS; THE PALLBEARER; SEVEN; A VIEW FROM THE TOP; MOONLIGHT AND VALENTINO; JEFFERSON IN PARIS; MRS. PARKER AND THE VICIOUS CIRCLE; MALICE; HOOK and SHOUT. Paltrow's first role was her remarkable performance in the critically-acclaimed FLESH AND BONE opposite Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid.
Paltrow made her directorial debut, co-writing and co-directing DEALBREAKERS, a short film she directed with her friend Mary Wigmore.
This spring, Paltrow will publish her debut cookbook entitled My Father’s Daughter and continues to develop her passion project GOOP.com. She first established her credibility in the culinary field when she co-wrote Spain, A Culinary Road Trip with acclaimed chef, Mario Batali.
Born in Los Angeles where she spent the first eleven years of her life, Paltrow stems from a very close-knit family deeply entrenched in the entertainment industry. Her father, Bruce Paltrow was a highly-successful producer ("St. Elsewhere", "The White Shadow") and her mother is the award-winning actress Blythe Danner. Paltrow and her younger brother, Jake, spent their early childhoods in Los Angeles where she attended St. Augustine by the Sea (now known as Crossroads).
When she was eleven, her family moved to New York, and she enrolled in the Spence School where she would later graduate. Paltrow attended the University of California at Santa Barbara with the intention of majoring in Art History. She quickly learned that college life was not something to which she felt committed and she withdrew from school, despite her father's strong recommendation to remain. It wasn't until he caught her moving performance in the Williamstown Theater production of “Picnic,” starring opposite her mother and Tony Goldwyn did he lend his support in her pursuit of an acting career.
Off screen, Paltrow is involved in many charitable works. She is active on behalf of Robinhood Foundation,
Kids Company, Bruce Paltrow Oral Cancer Foundation and Food Bank NYC.
